About Izzy

Hi! I am Izzy, a Maths and Biology tutor. I grew up in Sussex, moved to Southampton to study Marine Biology before starting a PhD in Biological Oceanography in Plymouth. I ended up leaving academia and have been working as an outdoor guide and SCUBA divemaster in Australia and New Zealand the past few years. I am now back in the UK and looking to tutor again, which I was doing before I left and I loved it. I feel my experience working with a range of tourists from all over the world for the past few years have honed my communication skills. This, combined with my academic history and previous tutoring experience give me a unique background and insight into communicating complex ideas to individuals. Part of my job as guide was to ensure guests felt comfortable in an environment that was new to them. It is important to me that you feel comfortable in your sessions with me, and we can work together so you get the most out of your sessions.

About the lesson

My sessions begin with an initial consultation to identify your learning goals and areas of difficulty, whether that is exam preparation, homework support, or reinforcing lesson content. Based on this, I create structured lesson plans based on topics identified and used end-of-session reviews to monitor progress. I am familiar with a range of exam boards for both maths and biology (AQA, OCR, Edexcel). I can also help students with their UCAS application/personal statement. I can tutor all ages up to GCSE level. My sessions typically last an hour. EXPERIENCE: -> 1 year experience as a self-employed tutor. Independently launched a tutoring service via social media, building a client base of 30+ students. Delivered bespoke tutorials tailored to individual learning needs. Developed strong interpersonal and planning skills through personalised education delivery. -> 6 months experience employed as tutor with non-profit The Brilliant Club. Designed and delivered a university-style course based on marine biology research to 14-year-olds from underrepresented backgrounds. Delivered pre-written climate change course to 11-year-olds. Taught and supported 48 students in total, including those with ADHD and varied educational needs. Strengthened public speaking, group management, and academic mentoring skills. QUALIFICATIONS: PhD student in Marine microbiology, University of Plymouth (withdrawn). MSci Marine Biology with study abroad, University of Southampton, Grade: 1st. A levels: Biology (A*), Maths (A*), Geography (A*) AS level: English Literature (A) GCSEs: 13 GCSEs (10 A*s and 3As) including A* in Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
