About Dimitri

As a lifelong student, I have followed my own curiosity through many different experiences. Upon graduating the University of Connecticut with a Political Science & Economics Degree, I delayed my plan to start law school by taking a leap of faith and teaching 5th graders in Washington, DC.

That was the start of a something that would turn into a lifelong passion for teaching and for sharing the joy of learning. After a spell as a paralegal for an expungement clinic, and as a community outreach coordinator for a homeless shelter in Baltimore, I landed an opportunity as a 10th Grade English Teacher at Baltimore Renaissance Academy. I now work to support my family's growing business, but I still have a passion for sharing the love of learning.

Each of these experiences have molded my approach to learning that respects and nurtures the individual wisdom of each person that enters the room, as leaders within their own lives and within their own pursuit of knowledge.

Inspired by Paolo Freire's dialogical approach to learning, where true education is akin to sparking a flame that roars well past any lesson with an instructor. You the student have to become an active agent in your development, and help guide the process of your life long journey with information, discernment and critical analysis. True education is a process of self making that is dynamic and forever evolving.

Our goal together, will be first to discover your 'why' as a young member of our global society, and to allow that 'why' to run as a central theme throughout your studies. Each bit of information we cover and dissect will be filtered through the lens of 'how might this apply to my own character, ideals and values?'

Literature and the arts as a whole, allow us to engage in conversation with the greatest minds who have ever lived, and allow us to generate our own insight from the perspective and wisdom, gathered by another.

A typical reading lesson will be broken down into a format such as this:
-Warm up (Do Now): to introduce the theme and set the tone.
-Engagement/Reflection
-I Do: to demonstrate the author's tone and provide an example of how to approach the material and dissect text dependent questions.
-We Do: we read together, and tackle text dependent questions with my support.
-You Do: you are challenged to continue independently while using the strategies we developed earlier in the lesson.
-Exit Ticket: you demonstrate an overall takeaway from the lesson as a check for understanding.

With that said, a typical writing lesson will include a similar format, but with thesis formulation exercises, sentence/transition starters and scaffolded essay structure prompts.

The heart of everything we do, will be about bringing out YOUR OWN VOICE and nurturing your own original perspective.
