About John

Hello everyone,

I'm John Vogel, and I'm here to guide you through our learning journey together. Before we dive into our lessons, I want to take a moment to introduce myself and share why I'm passionate about teaching.

My teaching philosophy revolves around creating a supportive and nurturing environment where you feel comfortable and empowered to explore and grow. My techniques involve a relaxed but focused approach. I believe in putting my students at ease with my calming demeanor, allowing you to be yourselves in our class environment.

Once we've established that comfort and trust, we can dive into our work. I'm here to push you to reach your full potential, always mindful of your individual capabilities. Whether it's exploring historical events, analyzing primary sources, or discussing social studies concepts, I'm committed to helping you succeed.

The length of our lessons may vary depending on various factors, but typically, they can be anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. I believe in flexibility and adaptability to ensure our sessions are productive and engaging.

As for my qualifications, I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in History from the University of Otago, as well as a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching from Victoria University of Wellington. My teaching journey has taken me from international schools teaching Middle Years Programme (MYP) Humanities to the New Zealand public schooling system, where I've taught Senior History and Junior Social Studies.

I'm excited to embark on this learning adventure with you all and can't wait to see the incredible progress we'll make together. Let's get started!

My teaching approach revolves around creating a comfortable and supportive environment for my students, allowing them to feel at ease while still maintaining focus and productivity. Here's a breakdown of my approach:

Creating a Relaxed Environment: I prioritize establishing rapport and trust with my students. By adopting a calming demeanor and showing genuine interest in their learning, I aim to create an atmosphere where they feel comfortable expressing themselves and asking questions without fear of judgment.

Understanding Individual Needs: I recognize that each student has unique strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Before starting lessons, I assess their abilities and preferences to tailor my teaching methods accordingly. Whether it's visual aids, hands-on activities, or interactive discussions, I adapt my approach to best suit their needs.

Setting Realistic Goals: I believe in setting achievable yet challenging goals for my students. By breaking down larger concepts into manageable tasks, I help them build confidence as they make progress towards mastering the material.

Encouraging Active Participation: I foster a collaborative learning environment where students are encouraged to actively engage with the material. Through discussions, debates, and group activities, I promote critical thinking and communication skills while reinforcing key concepts.

Providing Constructive Feedback: Feedback is crucial for student growth. I provide timely and constructive feedback to help students identify areas for improvement and celebrate their successes. By highlighting their progress and offering specific suggestions for enhancement, I empower them to take ownership of their learning journey.

Utilizing Varied Resources: I incorporate a diverse range of resources, including textbooks, multimedia tools, primary sources, and real-world examples, to make lessons engaging and relevant. By exposing students to different perspectives and sources of information, I broaden their understanding and appreciation of the subject matter.

As for the length of a typical lesson, it varies depending on the student's age, attention span, and the complexity of the material. Generally, lessons can range from 30 minutes to 1 hour, with breaks incorporated as needed to maintain focus and energy levels.

In terms of qualifications and experience, I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in History from the University of Otago and a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching from Victoria University of Wellington. I have experience teaching Middle Years Programme (MYP) Humanities at an international school and have also taught Senior History and Junior Social Studies in the New Zealand public schooling system.

My lessons are tailored to students ranging from middle school to senior levels, encompassing various age groups and academic abilities. Whether it's reinforcing foundational concepts or preparing for standardized exams, I strive to support each student in reaching their full potential.
