About Otis JA
Oxford Geography graduate (High 2:1, Junior Fiddian Scholar, 2023 to 2026). A*AA at A-Level in Economics, Geography and English Literature and seven grade 9s at GCSE, taken at Haberdashers' Monmouth School, where I was an academic scholar and Deputy Head Boy.
I now work in corporate communications, which is a job built on research, judgement and writing to deadline for demanding readers. Teaching essay subjects draws on exactly that, and it is why I focus on argument and structure rather than content alone.
I sat these papers recently and under the current specifications, so I can be specific about what the mark schemes reward. I have run university application talks and mentored Oxford applicants, and have coached junior rugby.
Sessions are planned in advance, start on time, and I give honest feedback. Students should leave a lesson knowing exactly what to work on before the next one.

~1 hour lessons, more available on request. I teach backwards from the mark scheme. Most students at GCSE and A-Level lose marks on structure and command words rather than knowledge, so I start by diagnosing where marks are actually going missing, usually through a past paper in the first session, then build sessions around fixing that.
Lessons are worked, not lectured. I set a question, we plan it together on the page, the student writes, then we mark it against the real criteria so they learn to see their own work the way an examiner does. For essay subjects I focus on argument construction and evidence selection. For Oxbridge applicants I run the same process on personal statements and interview practice, including unseen material under time pressure, which is what the interview actually tests.
Hold several years of experience informally tutoring for admissions and geography.
