About William

Ever since I was young, I have been enamored by the past. I marveled at the stories told of prior generations, and quickly began to see how our world has been shaped by the actions of men and women who died long before I was born. I believe that sharing and teaching these stories is important to determining our future, unless we wish to repeat one of the many dark chapters of history. After all, in the words of George Santayana; "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." It is easy to spot similarities and patterns in history because people did not learn from the lessons of the past, and much can be gleaned from analyzing why some succeeded and others did not. I hope to instill in my students a semblance of the wonder I have felt almost my whole life, while providing a practical and beneficial service, that extends beyond the realm of academia.

History is often overlooked, and seen as boring by many people these days. When taught ineffectively, it can indeed feel like this. But there is much that can be gained from effective instruction:

- Learning cause and effect over a large time-frame
- Comparing and contrasting similar event chains in different countries and time periods
- Understanding how factors like Geography and Economics drive individuals and politics both past and present
- Teaching in an engaging manner, with back and forth interactivity and questioning
- Providing a background to better contextualize events

Lessons will begin with a guiding question or questions, and will explore it in depth in accordance with the time available. Examples include:

- How did the finances of the 13 colonies differ from the French in their respective revolutions? Based on their differences in execution, what does this signify?
- Why did Napoleon feel the need to invade Russia? Do you agree with his reasoning?
- How did Ethiopia retain its independence unlike its neighbors? What role did its geography play on this?
- What are the similarities and differences between Napoleon's and Hitler's invasions of Russia? What about their reasoning?
- How did the placement of resources effect the decisions of national leaders between 1910 and 1945? What resources were the most significant in their decision making?
- How have advancements in communications changed the way trade is conducted? How might emerging technologies further change trade?

In reality, everything about history is the story of individuals, who behave in ways we can understand if we decompress the facts and have an adequate background to view them in. I emphasize this in my lessons, and try to get people to see themselves in these positions, and consider how they might act. This is ideal review for High School and general Social Sciences courses with historical or economic components in college.
