About Sophia

Hi, I’m Sophia, a biology tutor and Senior Research Associate with a strong research and teaching background. I studied Biology at Boston College (B.S., cum laude, GPA 3.80) and I’ve worked in biotech and research roles focused on gene expression, molecular biology, and cell-based models, including antisense oligonucleotides and neurodegenerative disease research. I’m also experienced in teaching and mentoring from my time as a Biology Department Teaching Assistant, where I held office hours to help students understand molecular biology concepts, lab techniques, and scientific writing. My tutoring style is structured, patient, and very practical: we focus on understanding the “why,” using diagrams, step-by-step reasoning, and lots of practice with the kinds of questions you’ll actually see in class or on exams. I work with middle school, high school, and college students in general biology, honors, and AP Biology, and I also offer general college and graduate school application support, including personal statements and interview prep.

My teaching approach in biology emphasizes conceptual understanding over memorization. I focus on helping students understand why biological processes work the way they do, using clear explanations, visual models, and real-world or clinical examples to make abstract ideas tangible. I adapt explanations to the student’s level, regularly check for understanding, and encourage students to verbalize their reasoning so misconceptions surface early. I also prioritize scientific language and precision while maintaining an encouraging, low-pressure environment.

A typical lesson begins with a brief review to identify gaps or confusion from previous material. I then introduce the day’s topic by connecting it to a broader biological principle (e.g., structure–function, regulation, evolution). We work through the core concept step by step using diagrams, guided questions, and examples, followed by targeted practice problems or application questions (such as data interpretation or experimental scenarios). Lessons end with a short summary and a clear takeaway, reinforcing how the topic fits into the larger course.

What distinguishes me is my ability to translate advanced biological knowledge into clear, intuitive explanations without oversimplifying. I am especially strong at identifying where a student’s understanding breaks down and addressing that point directly. My background allows me to connect classroom biology to real scientific and medical contexts, which helps students retain information and build confidence. I am also highly organized and intentional, tailoring each lesson to the student’s goals rather than following a generic script.

I tutor middle school and high school students in biology, including general biology, honors, and AP Biology, as well as students preparing for exams or needing long-term academic support. Lessons are adapted to the student’s level, learning style, and curriculum, with particular attention to students who feel overwhelmed by dense material or fast-paced classes.
