Grade 11 and 12 computer science tutor. I study mathematics at the University of Toronto and work on a machine learning team, and I teach the course the way working programmers actually think.

About Aryan

I'm a mathematics and statistics major at the University of Toronto, and I work on a machine learning team applying statistics to problems in biology. Most of my working day is spent writing and debugging Python. What I teach is what I actually do.

I also co-founded a cryptocurrency exchange and have competed in the Microsoft Imagine Cup and Google TensorFlow challenges. I mention it for one reason: there is a difference between a tutor who passed the course once and someone who ships software other people depend on.

Several years of tutoring, mostly Grade 11 and 12 students chasing a specific mark for a university program. They tend to be capable people who have hit the point where the course stops rewarding memorization.

The goal is that you can look at a problem you have never seen and have a sensible first move. That is the entire skill. Everything else is syntax you can look up.

Lessons are built around the mark you need. Computer science is a top-six course for a lot of students applying to engineering, computer science, or data programs, and it is often the one where a good student unexpectedly loses marks.

The usual reason is that the course moves from syntax to design faster than most classes prepare you for. Loops and conditionals are fine. Then arrays, methods, objects, recursion, and sorting arrive, and suddenly the problem is not writing the line but deciding what the program should be. That is the gap I work on.

A typical lesson starts with your assignment or a problem from a recent test. Before writing anything we trace what the program has to do by hand, on paper. Then you write it, I watch, and we fix the reasoning rather than just the error message. Debugging is a skill in itself and almost nobody is taught it directly.

I can help with Python and the general programming concepts underneath any language your course uses, plus the parts students find hardest: recursion, data structures, algorithm efficiency, and reading someone else's code.

I work from your teacher's handouts, rubrics, and past assignments. Marking schemes in computer science vary enormously, and knowing what your teacher wants in comments and structure is worth real marks.

Lessons run online with screen sharing, which works particularly well for programming, or in person in North York. The first thirty minutes are free.

Details

First thirty minutes free. Bring an assignment or a test that did not go the way you wanted and we will work out where the marks went. No cost, no obligation.

Everything is included in the hourly rate: practice problems, worked examples, and the exercises I put together between sessions around whatever you are finding hardest. No separate charge for preparation or materials, and no travel fee.

Packs: 5 hours for $140 and 10 hours for $260, which works out to $26 an hour. Most students book weekly through a semester, and that is what actually moves a grade.

Online lessons are the same rate as in person, and screen sharing works particularly well for programming.

Honestly, I teach because I enjoy it. If the rate is the only thing standing in the way, message me and we will sort something out.
