About Kulusé
Deeply connected to his Caribbean roots as well as his early jazz influences, Kulusé Souriant is a versatile and always passionate drummer who has found his own voice by exploring many musical configurations. He was the composer and the bandleader of the contemporary jazz quintet Markit Zero with whom he played in many french venues and festivals (Jazz in Marciac, Sunset/Sunside…) from 2013 to 2019.
Kulusé grew up in a jazz musician family and is very attached to this music. Along his career, he played in many jazz bands such as Two Slides, Art Bop Jazztet or Swing Vandals. Loving jazz didn’t prevent him to play in various other contexts including a forty drummers band (Ali Baba et les 40 batteurs) for ten years, a tour in Turkey with the rockabilly band Jerry Khan Bangers, a rock band with Maddy Keita, and to explore many creative music (Aram, Le Chantier, High Key…). He always was a substitute of choice in the Toulouse music scene, being able to adapt to any genre. His curiosity prompted him to live in Rio de Janeiro in 2019 and travel South-America for two years.
Conscious that the Toulouse jazz scene was vibrant but not well enough represented, he co-founded the Troisième Face collective, now regrouping more than one hundred young creative musicians. With the collective he had the chance to play with Romain Pilon, Nicolas Algans and Thomas Koenig.
In 2017 and 2018, he recorded and toured with the Guadeloupean singer Edmony Krater, reconnecting with the music of his ancestors – Gwo Ka – and having the opportunity to play in La Cigale (Paris), Earth Garden Festival (Malta) and African Acid is the Future (Berlin) among other places.
In 2018 Kulusé was teaching in Toulouse Jean-Jaurès University of Jazz where he had studied (notably with Jean-Marc Padovani and Marc Ducret), as well a giving drums lessons in Montrabé music school and Agostini drums school, another school he graduated from.
In 2021 Kulusé moved to New York were he studied at the New School of Jazz under the wise guidance of Ari Hoenig, Allison Miller, Reggie Workman, Darcy James Argue and Darius Jones. He also took private lessons with Kendrick Scot, Obed Calvaire and Alon Benjamini.
He finally settled down to Montreal where he earned a master degree in jazz performance and composition at UdeM. Curious of other cultures, Kulusé plays with the Colombian jazz bands Jomalé and Santiago Ferrer trio, in the latin-jazz band of his former teacher Julián Gutierrez and with the Argentinian songwriter Julian Muro, releasing soon an album under the direction of Dave Douglas.
He created a new band in Montreal with which he recorded his debut album “Douvan” to be released this year.
Renowned for his great musicality, Kulusé is a sensitive and solid drummer who defends a very personal approach to the instrument and to music.

I would be the best teacher for CEGEP or University music students or musicians who want to learn a new instrument. I'm mostly specialized in jazz (straight and modern) and musics from Cuba, Guadeloupe, Haïti, Colombia and Peru.
I've been a professional drummer for more than 12 years now and I toured in Europe, Turkey, South America and Canada. I graduated from Agostini drums school and jazz university of Toulouse France, and own a masters degree in jazz at UdeM. I also studied at the New School in New York with Ari Hoenig. I'd like to teach his method which is amazing. I also want to share what I learned from Kendrick Scott, Obed Calvaire, Amiz Ziv and Alon Benjamini.
We will be working on playing, musical culture, vocabulary, technique and how to aply it to develop your ow creativity.
I can really help you with :
- understanding rhythm (with the mind and feeling with the body : Ari Hoenig and Amir Ziv method)
- develop a better time and feel, a better confidence
- work on rudiment to develop better technique and vocabulary
- study the great (from Philly Joe to Eric Harland) and find your own voice
- work on be-bop and modern vocabulary for comping and soloing
- work on jazz standards (Ari, Kendrick and Quincy Davis methods)
- develop a 4-way coordination
- work in a studio context, being more precise, fluid
- work (if you want) on Caribbean, south American musics
- brushes
but also :
- posture, breathing
- deal with anxiety, confidence
- talk about styles (bop, the actual New-York scene, Avant-Garde) and finding your own path
I can also help you find a work routine and set up mid-term and long term goals.
I have 3 acoustic drum set in my studio, a sound system and we will record yourself and listen back to give you better feedback and check your improvements.
I speak French (native), English and Spanish (fluent) and Portuguese (I used to be fluent but I need some practice). My studio is on Cartier/Carrières street.

Certainly the most rigorous and passionate musician I know. Kulusé is both a marvellous musician, composer and arranger, and a passionate drummer, constantly pushing his limits. Also a great teacher, he managed to explain to me with disconcerting simplicity the basics of rhythmic work, which is ultimately important for any musician in this world. I can't recommend him highly enough!
Kulusé is a great musician and a great person. He loves music as much as anyone I know, and is always learning new things and working on his craft. When people ask me to recommend a drum teacher he is always the first person that comes to mind.
