About Jen

Hi young people and parents,

Thanks for having a look at my page.
What I've written here is mainly aimed at older students and their parents - let me know if anything is not clear. No questions are stupid questions, don't hold back :)

I'm a 36-year-old University graduate from Scotland who has worked as a tutor, language teacher, pre-school, primary and secondary teacher, starting when I was 18. As such, I have over 10 years' of experience, including 4 years at Scottish high schools (and I also worked for two years as a classroom support assistant in Edinburgh). I am currently a supply teacher for the Scottish Borders Region, with close links to Galashiels Academy, and am using some of my time at the moment to develop my own charity.

I know this time of year is very important for high school deadlines and I am absolutely here to help with that. I am also very happy to work with other age groups, including primary and pre-school, based on your needs. You can count on me to find the most useful resources and create relevant, useful, tutoring sessions that are designed specifically for you.

I speak Spanish and Gaelic, as well as holding various qualifications in teaching, phonics & literacy, drama, Scottish history, religious studies, and English & Scottish Literature.

Whatever the situation, I am here to help you (or your child) get to where you want to go. I will take these steps to make sure you succeed:
- review the situation, course materials and areas of strength/weakness
- identify what is holding you back and how to get passed that
- create an honest and ambitious roadmap for you (or your child)
- set tasks and give 'action feedback' so that practice really makes perfect

I value everybody's unique learning style and am looking forward to working with you to build you/ your child's confidence!

About the lesson

Working with your family or young person, I will create a study plan that everybody is happy with.

This could include anything from support with exam folio to learning to read for the first time. I can also help with less 'academic' goals, such as developing more enjoyment of reading or creative writing or working on projects that aren't specifically for a class but are related to your learning.

At the end of each lesson I will make sure there is time for you or your child to let me know any questions you have. I will listen carefully to you and your child and will update the plan as we go to make sure there is optimum progress between each session.
