About Annapurna

My name is Annapurna, I'm 22 years old, and just recently graduated from a degree in Human Geography and Social Anthropology. I strongly believe that learning can and should be exciting and fun, and that gaining a deeper understanding of how the world works is one of the most valuable things we can do with our time. Sadly, often school structures and exams can make it all very stressful, and it is my intention to help you navigate the stressful things with more ease, so that you can come back to the enjoyment of learning itself.

Things I love to do are read, make music and paint, and I'm always relating the things I learned in my courses at university to my artistic and musical exploits. If you're someone with a visual or musical mind as well, we can talk about how we can work with those parts of yourself that aren't maybe celebrated as much within an academic context, to make your work stand out even more.

Bell Hooks' book "Teaching to Transgress" has been hugely influential on my thoughts on education and teaching styles. I can recommend it to anyone who is feeling stuck and demotivated by school. Especially if you're a girl or an ethnic minority in school or both, like I was as well, the struggle to achieve our full potential has to be just a little bit fiercer, and with a lot of kindness to ourselves. Bell Hooks helped me through this, and I would be very happy to try and help you in turn.

I have a very person centred and dynamic approach to tutoring, I will spend time figuring out what it is exactly that you are struggling with and dedicate myself to helping you overcome that. I have a lot of experience working with people from all different ages and walks of life, I have worked with young kids in schools abroad teaching English, have given art classes, in-person tutoring and worked with kids with special needs. As a result I've found that each person has their own particular needs in order to be able to learn and grow as best they can in their own way, and I see it as my role to help you find that so that school doesn't need to be quite so stressful.

If you are interested in the arts and social sciences and think you might want to go on to study something related to those fields, but struggle to wrap your head around reading long texts, understanding big theories, thinking critically about how they all fit into each other and finding the right words to write about it all, I'm here to help! Understanding our human society and social relations and politics is a super complex task, and writing essays can be really daunting, but its really worth it. Once I gained confidence in my own skills around reading texts critically and synthesizing my arguments, I started enjoying school and university a whole lot more, and have ended up with a first class degree I'm really passionate about and career prospects in fields I'm genuinely engaged in. I would love to help other young people get to a similar point.

We will devise a lesson plan based on your needs and preferences, I can do one or two hour sessions however frequently you need it, and help prepare for exams or essays on whichever level you are currently on.
