About Olasumbo
My name is Olasumbo, but most people call me Sumbo. My motivation for tutoring comes from personal experience: I know what it feels like to need academic support, to juggle multiple exams, and to work hard to build confidence in challenging subjects. Throughout my schooling, I benefited greatly from tutors who helped me strengthen my skills and manage demanding workloads. Their impact on my education made me want to offer that same support to others. I have always taken my academics seriously. During high school I sat several major exams at once, including my IGCSEs, PSATs, and school finals, and I was able to navigate that period successfully through strong organisation and consistent effort. These experiences taught me discipline, resilience, and how to guide students who are under similar pressures. I am now studying Law at Durham University, the top-ranked university in the UK for law and one of the most academically rigorous programmes in the country. The analytical, writing, and time-management skills I developed throughout my education continue to serve me well in this environment, and I enjoy helping younger students build those same foundations. Teaching allows me to share the subjects I am confident in, support learners who feel overwhelmed, and help them reach the point where their hard work starts to show results.

My tutoring approach is holistic, structured, and fully personalised. I focus on helping students understand not only the material itself but also how to apply it effectively in exams, which is often the most challenging part of English. Many students know the content but struggle with organising ideas, integrating analysis, or feeling confident when approaching an essay question. I break these steps down clearly, teach students how to plan and structure high-quality responses, and provide detailed essay plans that give them a strong starting framework. Alongside this, I target key skills such as close reading, argument development, and critical analysis, and I adapt my methods based on the specific areas each student finds difficult. Lessons are typically one hour, but I am always happy to arrange longer sessions when we need additional time to work through complex topics or exam preparation. My students describe my teaching as patient, organised, and easy to follow, and I take care to make sessions engaging—especially for younger learners who may have shorter attention spans. I bring strong academic credentials, having earned two Academic Excellence Awards for maintaining the highest GPA in my school, a 3.8 CGPA, an A in IGCSE English, and A/A/B in my A-levels plus an A in my EPQ. Alongside this, I scored 1100 on the PSAT and worked as an editor and writer for my school magazine, which strengthened my understanding of writing, clarity, and communication. I have been tutoring for several years, starting with my younger sister and later supporting GCSE English Literature students during my A-levels. This experience has given me confidence in teaching different ages and levels, and my lessons are fully adaptable depending on whether a student needs foundational support, exam coaching, or advanced guidance. I am most experienced in tutoring for GCSE and A-level English, but I welcome learners of all ages and stages. My aim is always to help students feel equipped, confident, and prepared to produce their best possible work.
