About David

I came to teaching rather late in my career, having been an environmental and energy consultant in my previous career. I like to think this has given me a broader and more holistic approach to my teaching, with an ability to place the physics within a wider context.

I see physics as a very visual subject, and want my students to develop the appropriate pictures in their minds. We all see things slightly differently, and create our own mental models that help to bring physics to life. I want to understand my student's pictures and correct misconceptions where they occur.

The complex mathematics that underpins the physics becomes easier if we can visualise the application of that mathematics - so it's maths with meaning.

About the lesson

I have been teaching, and tutoring, for 14 years and have experience of teaching GCSE, IGCSE and A Level Physics with the following exam boards: AQA, Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas/WJEC. Whilst the fundamental physics tackled by each board tends to be similar, it is important to understand their different styles and nuances for students to extract maximum marks from their exams.

My lessons will be focused on firstly ensuring the basic concepts and definitions are secure. I like to use lots of visual material (videos, digital models, drawings and diagrams) to develop the appropriate knowledge and correct typical misunderstandings.

We will then move on to more complex calculations and explanations, developing the appropriate techniques to address each type of question.

For many students the issue is not the basic understanding of the physics concepts, but the application of their knowledge to the unfamiliar questions they are presented with in assessments. Past paper questions are an essential part of preparing students for exams so we will tackle as many of these as possible.

I am based in Devizes, Wiltshire, and happy to meet students at my house or at theirs, if local. I am also happy working online for students that are further afield.

I charge £45 per hour for GCSE teaching and £60 per hour for A Level teaching.
