About Carolyn

Prior to becoming a qualified teacher I worked in various industries where strong maths & numeracy skills were required. During this time I was shocked to see that lack of skills was causing my colleagues to become anxious around tasks they could adequately complete. I became a team trainer supporting these colleagues & this led me on to realise I had a passion for teaching. I decided to go back to university & qualified as a maths teacher. I then spent the next 20 years teaching in FE Colleges & secondary schools. 3 years ago I became a tutor as I found for some students a classroom was just not cutting it for their learning and it enabled me to give the 1 to 1 support that some students need.

About the lesson

My name is Carolyn & I believe that the acquisition of maths/numeracy skills is achievable for all given the right tuition. My lessons are personalised to each student, giving them the opportunity to work at a pace & style that suits them. I have high expectations for all of my students & encourage them to challenge themselves to build confidence in a subject that can often cause anxiety. I aim to identify misconceptions in previous learning to enable deeper understanding of the subject & achieve their goals. This could be achieving a grade 9 at GCSE or an entry-level qualification for those returning to study. Lessons take the form of 1 to 1 sessions or small groups, all online. The sessions are fully interactive with quizzes, questioning & modelled answers. I believe that exams may not be the only indicator of good numeracy but with strong preparation & technique students are able to shine. I have many years' experience working with SEND students & for those with additional needs I adapt my tuition to fit with their preferred ways of learning.
