About Leah
I am a senior at Linfield University obtaining a B.S. in Chemistry and Secondary Education. I applied to graduate schools for this upcoming Fall 2021, in hopes of obtaining my PhD in Organic Chemistry. I just finished part time student teaching for seventh grade science for fall semester, and I am about to start full time student teaching for high school chemistry. I have aided in classrooms for three years (freshman through junior year), which involved helping with grading, walking around and answering students questions, and observing/learning how to effectively teach students of unique, diverse backgrounds. For student teaching, I plan lessons, develop my own learning materials (i..e worksheets, exams, graphic organizers, etc.), ask guiding questions, and foster a positive, inclusive learning environment.

My philosophy for teaching and education is that: 1) Questions are always welcome; 2) Failure is okay - they are part of the learning process; 3) Treat others how you expect to be treated - be safe, respectful, and responsible. Science is rooted in exploring the unknown, and the scientific process starts with asking a question. Then, from this question, you formulate a hypothesis and develop an experiment to test this hypothesis. You perform this experiment many times, and often with many failures before reaching success. With these failures comes learning. Every time you fail, you modify your experiment to make it better. Therefore, as a science teacher, I want to make sure that my students feel comfortable asking questions, and know that it is okay to fail, because that is how we learn; failure and questions are both crucial parts of the scientific process.

I charge a flat rate of $15/hour for chemistry students of all levels. I offer in person lessons (face to face) for students living in McMinnville OR, but I do not charge a traveling fee. For students who are 1) not comfortable meeting face to face due to the pandemic or 2) do not live in Mcminnville, I offer online (zoom) tutoring sessions for the same rate ($15/hour).
