About Julie

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Victoria and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UBC, which means I've written my way through two very different academic worlds — and I can help you navigate yours.

I spent a year teaching at the post-secondary level, where most of my students were ESL learners, and I consistently went beyond classroom hours to help them develop the English skills needed to succeed academically. That hands-on experience taught me more about where students actually get stuck than any textbook could.

I'm patient, straightforward, and focused on results. I don't believe in busy work — every session is built around what you're actually working on, so your time with me translates directly into better grades and stronger writing. Whether you're an ESL student finding your footing in academic English or a college student who just needs help making your ideas land on the page, I'll meet you where you are and get you where you need to go.

Teaching Methodology:
My approach is direct and student-led. I start by identifying exactly where a student is struggling — whether that's sentence structure, argument construction, tone, or research skills — and work backward from there rather than following a generic curriculum. I use real examples from the student's own writing as the primary teaching material, because correcting abstract exercises rarely translates into actual improvement. For ESL students especially, I focus on why English works the way it does, not just what is correct, since understanding the logic behind grammar and academic conventions builds independence faster than rote correction.

Typical Lesson Plan:
A first session starts with a short diagnostic: I ask the student to bring a piece of their own writing or recent assignment, then we work together to assess where their needs. From there we identify priority areas and create a plan around the student's active coursework — upcoming essays, assignments, or presentations. Thus, each hour has immediate practical payoff.

What Sets Me Apart:
I have two degrees — a BA in Anthropology from the University of Victoria and a BSN from UBC — which means I'm genuinely comfortable with both humanities writing (thesis-driven essays, critical analysis, research papers) and professional writing. During my year of post-secondary teaching, the majority of my students were ESL learners, and I regularly spent time in one-to-one sessions helping my students develop the English language skills needed to complete their coursework. That experience gave me a practical, ground-level understanding of where ESL students specifically get stuck — not just grammatically, but in understanding how academic English thinks and argues. I know how to bridge the gap between subject knowledge and written expression efficiently.
