About James

Hi, I'm James (27), a PhD student in Music Psychology at the Universisty of Leeds. I am passionate about psychology research and teaching and am currently pursuing an academic career.

I have an extensive academic background in psychology and a wide-ranging understanding of the many topics covered in the subject. In 2019, I graduated from my MA in Applied Psychology of Music with a distinction and award for overall academic achievement. In 2021, I published a music psychology research paper in the peer-reviewed academic journal, Music & Science. My bachelor's degree in Psychology and Education (joint hons.) was obtained from the University of Southampton in 2017. Other relevant qualifications include psychology AS and A levels as well as an extended project qualification diploma (EPQ) in the field of psychology.

I am currently completing my PhD thesis investigating subjective experiences of electronic dance music events and their relation to social bonding. I have presented my research at numerous academic conferences and I am also engaged in research projects for the nightlife industry. Historically, my passion for psychology stems from having multiple relatives with depression, anxiety, and personality disorders whom I have both learned from and helped support. I believe I can add useful insight by drawing upon these experiences when tutoring such topics to students.

About the lesson

I tutor undergraduate, A level, AS level, and GCSE level psychology (and up to master's level in music psychology) and am very familiar with the demands of a psychology undergraduate degree as well as the A level and GCSE syllabuses.

I can help with the following:
- Tutoring on all areas of psychology
- Essay and thesis writing
- Exam revision
- Productivity, workflow, and study tips
- Conducting psychological research
- Data collection and analysis

In the first (free) lesson I will aim to understand what you wish to gain from our sessions and how I can best support you with the issues you are facing. I have a wide range of resources and first-hand experience I can draw upon to help teach my clients.

My background in education (as well as psychology) means I am well-versed in techniques and teaching styles to get the most out of students. I take a methodical, friendly approach to tutoring and it's my aim to get the best out of my students with a focus to tackle what they are struggling with head-on. As a current student myself (who is always learning!) I can empathize with other students who may be struggling with coursework, exam revision, and meeting deadlines.

I am happy to tutor you in person in my own home, at your home (Leeds or the immediate surrounding area), or online!
