About Eve

My name is Eve and I like all kinds of stuff, including books, computer technology, food, gardening, hiking, martial arts, sports and video games. We should have plenty to talk about in Spanish and English! I really enjoy talking to people and learning about what they love to learn and do. I firmly believe you can do anything you put your mind to, and I'll help you every step of the way.

About the lesson

I have near native fluency in Spanish and enjoy learning, speaking, reading and writing several other languages. My bachelor's degree is in Spanish and I am pursuing a graduate degree in Russian. So while you'll learn a lot, hopefully we'll learn cool stuff together, too!

My teaching methodology is 100% student-centered. What do you want to do with Spanish? Will you use it for business, pleasure, or some of both? Do you want to learn to cook delicious food from Spanish-speaking countries and cultures? Perhaps you'd like to visit countries in Central or South America, or Europe, or the many Spanish-speaking communities which exist worldwide. Maybe you just enjoy learning! I certainly do.

Whatever your goals are in learning Spanish, I can help you reach them. Here's how:

During our first lesson, we'll introduce ourselves briefly and get to know one another. This will be almost as if we were two people seated next to each other on a long flight - from Chicago to Mexico, perhaps. We'll discuss your name, age, hobbies and interests. This will help me to understand your level of proficiency in spoken Spanish, and you to practice Spanish phonetics (the sounds made by letters as they are spoken and written.)

This is already quite a lot for just one lesson! But don't worry: I 100% guarantee you'll enjoy learning Spanish, because Spanish is fun. It is a phonetic language. You may already remember that word, "phonetic." This means that in Spanish, for example, my name, "Eva," will always be pronounced in the same way it's written. Furthermore, the sentence "Yo soy estudiante americana" will always be pronounced phonetically. This makes Spanish much easier to learn than, for example, Mandarin Chinese, which is a tonal language. It's not phonetic, and neither are French or English.

Of course, everyone who speaks any language on Earth has an accent and a dialect. You may have noticed that people from Spain and people from Mexico, for example, speak Spanish quite differently. We'll definitely learn about these differences once we get the basics down. Differences in dialect are often fascinating, and have much to do with world history and culture.

Maybe you already know how easy and fun it can be to learn Spanish, so you're already ahead! But perhaps you're a brand-new language learner, or maybe your native language isn't English. Not to worry: I have successfully helped non-English speakers learn Spanish, as well as English as a second language. Wherever you're at in your learning journey, I'll lend you my passion and excitement about language, linguistics and even literature if you want that. It all starts with a simple introduction!
