About Amelia
I have been either a French teacher or French translator since 2002 when I started teaching college French classes to beginning and intermediate students. I have been a translator more recently than I have been a teacher, but I enjoy both. I have a MA in French with an emphasis on French literature, and even as an undergraduate student I obtained a minor in French. I have lived abroad in France three times, first as an exchange student, then as a graduate student accompanying other American exchange students, and lastly as an English instructor at a university in France. I am a patient person when I teach because I really want students to learn at the pace that is comfortable for them, and I recall what it is like to be a beginning language learner.

I tailor my lessons individually to the student based on their goals, their time limitations, and what they hope to accomplish with the study of French. Students in the past have ranged from people simply studying for a midterm or final exam, to people who wanted to communicate with family members abroad, or students who planned to travel to France in the future. I have taught the Natural Approach, which is a classroom-style nearly total immersion with the exception of the introduction of grammar points. The introduction of vocabulary is done total immersion style and then structured, simple conversations using the new grammar and vocabulary for that week follow. Fun activities with the college class included setting up a marketplace where each student ran a specific shop and had a specific job at that shop, and students took turns visiting other shops and ordering things in French such as food, groceries, etc. In the classroom at the intermediate level we watched movies or read books and discussed them in French afterward.
