About Toby

Born in the UK to British Parents, after relocating to France, in 2006, I have successfully completed the French education system up to the equivalent of A-Levels (French Baccalaureate) and I am now studying Ship Science at University of Southampton. I am proficient and current in French and English.

Whilst English is spoken at home, French is spoken at all other times. I attended French National public and private schools, as opposed to International schools. Thereby immersing me fully into the French language and culture.

During the holidays, my family participated in an English language/ cultural hosting program ... teaching and assisting French students with English language skills. Students would stay with our family for a minimum of a week. During their stays, being fully bi-lingual, my role was to accompany and assist student (outside of lessons), thereby building their confidence and giving them a practical approach on using the information they had gained during their lessons.

Frequently, on school trips from France to English speaking countries, I was able to assist, where students and teachers were having difficulties. When travelling I often find I am able to help people where either of these languages is a problem.

About the lesson

My aim is to provide enjoyable lessons that will encourage students to improve their French communication skills.

Each lesson will include reading, speaking and written exercises, using interesting current topics. We will start lessons with a casual discussion on “what have you been up to since I last saw you?”, to ease students into their lesson and build confidence in the communicating.

I will take time to understand my students personally so as to provide lessons that will motivate them, thereby gaining their interest whilst at the same time fulfilling their requirements. For example … If they have a love of football and history, their lessons and homework can be partially built around these subjects.

We will work on syntax, verb conjugation and vocabulary, using subjects that not only follow the curriculum but also interest my students.

Conversational lessons will be taken up by an interaction between myself and the student. The conversations will cover day to day life, current news and affairs, plus the topics that are, once again, of interest to my students. My aim is to make students feel at ease so that when they are eventually faced with “the real world”, they feel confident and not afraid.

I will provide continual assessment and feedback so that everyone is aware of which areas of their study have been most effective and which areas need to be more attention.

By taking this slightly less formal approach my intention is to make such lessons more enjoyable for the student.
