About Jacqueline
I am a French tutor with 5 years of experience and a Bachelor of Arts in French and Phonetics alongside a diploma in Speech and Language Sciences. I have taught over 160 students with a teaching focus on pronunciation development that is unusual among language tutors. My phonetics training gives me a precise scientific vocabulary for describing exactly what the mouth, tongue, lips, and airstream need to do to produce any sound in the French system, and this precision makes my pronunciation instruction far more effective than impression-based approaches. I am a native speaker of British English who achieved near-native French pronunciation through the deliberate application of phonetic principles, and this personal experience of phonetic self-improvement gives my teaching a practical dimension students deeply relate to.

My French teaching is rooted in phonetics, and I use the International Phonetic Alphabet as a central teaching tool — not as an object of study but as a precise language for describing exactly what sounds need to be produced and where the difference between the French sound and the English approximation lies. I begin all new students with a phonological assessment — we work through the French sound system systematically and I identify which sounds the student is currently producing accurately, which they are producing approximately, and which they are missing altogether — because this assessment drives all subsequent pronunciation instruction. Nasal vowels are addressed with physical instruction including the position of the soft palate, the direction of airflow, and the characteristic mouth shape of each nasal vowel type, because students who understand the mechanics produce them more reliably than those who try to approximate by ear alone. Liaison is taught as a systematic rule set including the categories of obligatory, facultative, and forbidden liaison, because most students have only a vague idea of when liaison applies and this produces both overcorrection and undercorrection. Rhythm groups — the way French organizes syllables into phonological units — are addressed because French rhythm is fundamentally different from English rhythm and most learners unconsciously impose English rhythmic patterns onto French speech. Intonation patterns are taught through imitation exercises with authentic recordings followed by self-recording and comparison. I record every student's pronunciation at the beginning, middle, and end of a course and play these back to back so students can hear their own development. My teaching goal is a student who is understood by native French speakers without effort.
