About Dorthea

After completing a Ph.D. in French at UCLA, I moved to the Davenport, IA/Quad Cities area with my husband when he got a job here. Currently, I teach English and Philosophy at St. Ambrose University and Augustana College. I have 15 years of experience tutoring French, German, Spanish, English writing and literature, philosophy, communications, history, and other humanities and social sciences subjects. My students tell me that they appreciate my ability to explain concepts and reinforce skills in a way that considers their individual learning styles. I am happy to tutor everyone from elementary school students to college students, and can plan curricula for independent adult learners.

My teaching method is holistic and individualized - I consider each student's learning style (e.g. visual, auditory, kinesthetic) and the social processes and emotional needs that affect the learning needs of my students. For instance, I assess students' needs to develop social skills, pinpoint areas where they lack confidence, and help them find their intrinsic motivation to learn, etc. By using frequent progress checks, praise, and growth mindset theory, I help students build confidence alongside their new skills.

My foreign language lessons feature a lot of role-playing and practice in different real-world social and day-to-day language tasks, during which I will gently correct errors or assist with pronunciation. I am an expert in the grammar of my native language of English and my second language of French, and can help students for whom learning grammar is the biggest challenge of foreign language study.

Although I love teaching foreign languages, I also enjoy helping students succeed in other subjects and on standardized tests. In humanities and social sciences subjects, I help students learn consider the historical development of a discipline, look for textual patterns, understand how concepts fit together within the larger fields of study, and learn to explain those concepts in their own words. Finally, my test preparation tutoring helps students build skills in grammar, usage, style, and vocabulary that they need to raise their scores on the English and Reading portions of tests such as the SAT, ACT, GRE, ISEE, and TOEFL.

Details

My rates are higher than average because I have taught the subjects that I tutor at the university level. Not only do I know these subjects far better than the average tutor, I also know exactly what professors are looking for and am experienced with helping students learn the material. However, because I understand that students often have limited budgets, I offer discounts to students who buy 5 or 10 hours up front.
