About Jake

As an American who learned to speak French fluently outside of my home, it is an incredibly gratifying and rewarding skill to have that has opened a lot of doors for me in my career and in my relationships. What makes French so great is that lots of amazing people speak it, it's a remarkably beautiful language, and it comes up in a surprising amount of situations, especially in New York City!

My philosophy toward learning languages is all about bringing what we learn into the real world. Language classes can be frustrating because it often seems like what you're studying won't be used anywhere outside the classroom. Luckily, I know this feeling, and want to help you be able to speak French whenever, wherever, and with whomever you want!

At Columbia University, I took the majority of my courses in French and studied abroad at the University of Paris at the Panthéon-Sorbonne through their university exchange program. Some notable courses that I took in French include "Questions in African Literature," "Discovering Existence," "The Politics of Memory in France Post-WWII," "French International Diplomacy," "Paris en contexte," "Le pouvoir en Russie," and "Violence par et contre les femmes."

I'm available to work with students at all levels from ages six to adult. I'm also available for test prep for college entry exams such as the AP French Language & Culture Exam and the SAT II French Subject Test. I personally scored a 5 on the AP French Exam and a 740 on the SAT II Subject Test.

About the lesson

We will devote parts of each lesson to speaking, reading, writing, and listening. Each of these things is important to work on consistently, especially if you are taking the AP Exam or Subject Test. With time and practice you'll definitely see yourself improve and feel more comfortable working within the language itself!

I'm available for 30, 45, or 60-minute lessons virtually or in-person if you're in New York City.

Topics of interest:

Beginner: parts of speech, verbs, adjectives, useful sayings, question words, basic vocabulary (family, food, places, transportation, animals, household, etc.)

Intermediate: tenses, sentence structures, basic conversation skills, more context-specific vocabulary, listening for identification and meaning, formal writing

Advanced: idiomatic expressions, colloquialisms, advanced grammatical structures, reading comprehension & analysis, advanced conversation skills, listening for understanding and critical thought, phonetics and accent training
