About Summer
I am a freelance editor and writer with nearly fifteen years of experience under my belt. But technicalities aside, I actually love to write. I've written two fiction books and I'm also a published poet. When I'm not writing, I love to coach writers on how they can jumpstart their creative careers. I'm an expert query letter coach and regularly read and edit fiction and nonfiction manuscripts alike. The best part of my job is when I'm able to follow up with writers and work through snags in their work. This is why I like the idea of SuperProf-- because this isn't a one time thing. If we work well together, I'm officially in your corner to teach, encourage, and inspire.
I studied English and secondary education in college with hopes of teaching high school English, but fate had different plans for me as I ultimately decided to stay home and school my own children. Currently I have six children (yes, six!) and all test far above their current grade levels when subjected to testing. My secret? Reading. We read all the time. We listen to books, we write books, we tell our stories. That said, I'm great with children and teens! Plenty of experience there!
Because my children attend a part-time education enrichment program (fancy title for co-op), I had the opportunity to teach a creative writing course to middle schoolers. It was great fun and I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

My lessons depend on what I'm being hired for, however creative writing is my favorite subject. I like to begin with short prompts and quick paragraph exercises to get the creative juices flowing! Next, we'll solidify your focus on the story you actually want to tell. I'm an expert in Story Genius (one of my favorite craft books!) and can help you nail down character flaws, the great disruption to your character's life (after all, story is all about disruption), and the triumphant return of life, not quite as it was before, but better.
If you're looking for help in basic English instruction, we'll talk the basics of grammar, work through examples, and write our own. I'll guide you on how to write the perfect sentence (and yes, sometimes we will break all the rules but it'll still sound pretty, I promise).
Need help with essays? I don't pretend to enjoy writing them but having edited dozens of self-help nonfiction, I know how to dazzle your readers and keep them engaged. We'll start by focusing on the subject, writing an outline, and move onto *duh, duh, duh* the dreaded notecards. Trust me. Once all the information is gathered and the notes are ordered, writing is a piece of cake. Even as a highly creative person I have to say, writing is mostly about getting the words in the right order.
If you need help with poetry, this is another area I shine! As a published poet, I love to see poets bloom into all of their beautiful potential. One of my favorite activities to do with students is to draw a subject from a hat and without thinking, jot a quick stanza in verse. Oh, oh, oh! Also, there's this great activity where I write a line, and my student writes a line, and I write another . . .trust me, it's good times! We'll talk limericks, sonnets, haikus, and free verse, and learn how poetry is mostly just giving ourselves permission to say what we need to say, however we need to say it (technically you don't even need me to do this, but still, I'm here to help!).
Well, folks, that's all! Let me know how I can help you on your creative (or academic) journey!

Summer is a gifted instructor in shaping raw material into a source of pride in terms of syntax and content. She is skilled at meeting you where you are at in your writing process and teaching you how you can take the next step in developing your material. I appreciated her pointed and intuitive questions for the benefit of my readers.
If you're searching for an extremely detailed editor who can offer nuanced commentary on everything from character development to narrative cohesion, look no further. Summer helped me transform my behemoth first novel draft into a clear and concise manuscript that meets industry standards. She is completely honest without being brutal and brings such a bright energy to the editing process. She was sensitive to my vision for the story and helped me strengthen and tighten everything as a whole. I cannot recommend her services enough!
