About Jana
I want to teach because I love to learn. Because I love English and I love people and I would love to talk about these things with you. About literature and philosophy and history and political theories. About how connected all of these disciplines are. I'd also like to teach because I think, as much as you might be able to learn from me, I'd like the opportunity to learn from you, too.
I work as a carer at an aged residential facility but my passion very much resides with the humanities. I want to help inspire and nurture this love within others as well through GENUINE EXCITEMENT, compassion and empathy.
Language is the primary way we communicate. It's how we tell stories and make friends and preserve histories. Language is in the music you listen to and the menu you read at dinner. As such, language can be very accessible, when approached correctly. Unfortunately, within the NZ education system, English isn't always made to be as accessible as it should be. I would like to try and remedy this, one tutorial at a time. :)

Hi there - my name is Jana. I learn best through dialog and constructive feedback and as such that is how I structure my tutorials. I want to provide a safe space to ask ANY QUESTION and I will do my best to answer you -- please note that my specialty is in English with a bit of high school level history and social studies, so, while I can try and work through a physics question with you, I cannot guarantee I will have a confident answer!
Any session with me is YOUR SESSION and YOUR SPACE to do with as you need. Bring me any piece you are working on (or send it to me ahead of time) and I am happy to mark it and give you feedback, either line-by-line looking at grammar and the final polishing (due to this process being more in-depth it is a wee bit more expensive) or a general overview looking at ideas, content or, in the case of creative writing, character development, plot and motive.
While English (writing and reading) is a labor of love I have had a number of my pieces published in established journals. I have also won/placed in several english-related competitions -- poetry, short stories and even a couple speech competitions!
These tutorials are geared towards people working to achieve NCEA, however, I am happy to do a tutorial with someone younger, too, so long as they (you) understand these sessions are collaborative. They are not like a lesson in a classroom where a teacher might speak at you for 50-60 mins. You will get out of these tutorials what you put in.

I charge $22 per hour if we meet in person (at a cafe, the library etc) and $20 for an hour over the phone or any other voice/video calling program (I have Skype, Facebook and Zoom, among others).
If you want me to read a piece you have written and give you feedback, please contact me and send an excerpt so I can give you a direct quote. For anything up to 1500 words, generally, I can do an overarching edit for $30 (involves reading the piece, writing up some notes and a half hour conversation with you). The pricing for a line-edit of a piece up to 1500 words (involves looking at your grammar, punctuation, word choice, intent as well as overarching themes, character depth, etc and a half hour conversation with you) starts at $45.
Please feel free to contact me, though, as I can work to a sliding scale or a payment method of regular installments. I realise students are often on a budget and I am happy to work with you to make your learning as inspiring as possible.
