About Luc

I am a highly-professional English teacher working for Sterna International Education Consulting in Waterloo, London. About the lesson

I am a warm and open-hearted person who likes to be creative. Textbooks can contain useful explanations, but they often make learning a language feel heavy. I use the textbook explanations, but I focus on getting the student to use the new vocabulary or grammar in real-life contexts. We will do a lot of example situations and role-play. When you are expressing yourself using the new grammar, you will remember how to use it in the future. I also like to give detailed feedback on students' writing as this is one of the best ways to identify and correct grammar issues. When a student has difficulties with a certain grammar structure, I will provide exercises, example answers and targeted questions in order to make sure the student can correct that hole in their understanding. I encourage the student to trust themselves and express their ideas. During discussions, I like to take a few notes of any big grammar mistakes so that after the discussion we can go back and review. I will give some grammar explanations and also propose a few different word choices. I will also give compliments when the student uses very accurate English! All of our work will be recorded inside a shared GoogleDoc, and there will be chapters which make the GoogleDoc like your own personalised study book. The student can type their homework inside it and at any time review all we have covered during the course. I have a TESOL teaching qualification, an English BA degree and am fluent in Mandarin. My step-mother is from Tianjin and I have studied at Taiwan National University and ICLP language school. I have taught many Chinese students over the last 3 years and this has allowed me to become an expert English teacher for Chinese students. I also am happy to teach students from other nationalities and my experience learning Chinese helps me understand the difficulties and challenges language students face. I am a very supportive and patient teacher with a lot of empathy.
