About Melika

As a tutor, my extensive background as a former middle school principal and English and Language Arts teacher enables me to bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to my students. With over a decade of experience in education, I have developed a deep love for literature and a passion for helping students explore its richness. I believe in the power of discussions and writing to craft meaning and foster critical thinking. I go beyond the texts themselves, connecting literature to broader societal contexts, encouraging students to analyze and understand the world around them.

My approach as a tutor goes beyond imparting knowledge and academic skills. I prioritize the holistic development of my students, ensuring they become independent learners and empowered change agents. I create a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students feel comfortable sharing their perspectives and asking questions. By addressing their social and emotional needs alongside their academic growth, I strive to nurture the whole person. I firmly believe in providing students with the necessary tools and guidance to succeed, fostering their confidence and helping them develop the skills needed to navigate their educational journey and beyond.

I have a comprehensive understanding of the science of reading, reading comprehension, critical analysis, and writing composition. By leveraging my expertise in these areas, I can provide students with valuable insights and guidance, helping them develop their language skills and become proficient readers and writers.

My lesson planning and facilitation are tailored to meet the unique needs and learning styles of each student. Through active listening and empathetic communication, I create a supportive and encouraging learning environment. I firmly believe in the power of motivation and inspiration to drive student success. By fostering a love for reading and writing and celebrating students' achievements, I encourage them to reach their full potential. I provide timely and constructive feedback, empowering students to refine their skills and become independent learners.

While lessons may vary based on the student's needs and preferred learning style, a typical lesson will consist of the following:

1. Warm-up/Engagement Activity: Begin the lesson with a warm-up or engagement activity to capture the student's attention and activate prior knowledge. This could involve a short discussion, a thought-provoking question, or a brief reading or writing exercise related to the topic of the day.

2. Introduction of New Concepts: Introduce new concepts, literary devices, or writing techniques relevant to the lesson's objective. Provide clear explanations, examples, and real-world applications to help students understand and connect with the material. Encourage questions and discussion to promote active learning.

3. Guided Practice: Engage the student in guided practice to reinforce their understanding and build confidence. Provide structured exercises, writing prompts, or reading passages that allow the student to apply new concepts or skills. Offer guidance, support, and feedback as they work through the activities.

4. Independent Practice: Assign independent practice tasks to foster student autonomy and reinforce learning. These could include writing assignments, reading comprehension exercises, or critical analysis tasks. Clearly communicate the expectations and criteria for evaluation. Students are encouraged to ask questions or seek clarification when needed.

5. Review and Discussion: Allocate time for review and discussion to ensure comprehension and address any misconceptions or challenges. Review key points covered during the lesson, address student questions or concerns, and provide further explanations or examples as needed. Engage students in critical thinking and encourage them to share their insights.

6. Feedback and Assessment: Provide constructive feedback on student work from the previous lesson or independent practice tasks. Offer specific comments on areas of improvement as well as recognition for strengths. Highlight successful aspects and guide students on how to refine their work. Discuss strategies for continued growth and improvement.

7. Extension Activities: Offer extension activities or additional resources for students who demonstrate proficiency and a desire for further exploration. These activities include advanced writing prompts, optional reading recommendations, or creative projects that allow students to deepen their understanding and pursue their interests.

8. Closure and Summary: Conclude the lesson with a brief summary of the key takeaways and learning objectives. Provide closure by connecting the lesson to future topics or assignments, emphasizing the relevance and importance of the skills they have acquired.
