About Kevin
As a 7th/8th Expeditionary Learning math teacher I saw a 20% increase in math achievement and growth for my students, over a 3 year span. As a high school principal of a small school, and a founding principal of a project-based learning high school, I have innovated better ways for students to find relevance, meaning and success in their education. As a school designer and founder of a technical high school in rural sub-Saharan Africa, I know what it means to provide the best learning experiences for those often with the least opportunity. As Executive Director for a non-profit aimed at providing second-chance support for at-risk students serving expulsions from their home high schools, I have a heart for working with students who need a fresh start. I currently work as a curriculum coordinator at a Career and Technical Education center, helping instructors build meaningful connections between technical content (i.e. culinary, auto/diesel mechanics, entrepreneurship, health sciences, aviation, etc.) and the essential math content that students MUST have before graduating high school. Making math relevant is my jam. I'm hopeful to walk alongside a few students looking to transform their mindset and grow their abilities in math, all while making a pleasant experience that inspires them to succeed on their own.

I am a big believer that those who do the work, do the learning. I lead you on a path to build a conceptual understanding by starting with a relevant and meaningful problem and then unpacking what "tools" you will need to figure it out. Along the way I discover your misconception and misunderstandings and we correct them.
A typical lesson would start with the student grappling with a problem that is fun, intriguing, personally relevant or necessary. We figure out what the question is and what information we would need to answer it. Then we find the information--through modeling, experiment, measurement, whatever! Then the fun begins: we determine what kind of mathematical trickery would be needed. Your probably already have some of the concepts, but those that we discover you don't have yet, we'll dig in! We'll see why the math works the way it does, we'll go from the concrete to the abstract and we'll ultimately use the skill to solve the problem that just has to be solved.
In the end, mathematics is a vehicle for solving problems. Those students who believe they can tackle problems--because they have practice and experience doing so--feel confident and actually enjoy math.
I have developed this model of learning using project-based learning techniques and resources over 2 decades of teaching and learning. I borrow from the 3-Act Math model from Dan Meyer, the Connected Mathematics Program developed at Michigan State University, and my own experience helping students change their mind about their abilities and walk away with a new and better taste in their mouth about math.
I focus mainly on middle level math up through algebra 2 because these levels seem to be the most defining in the student's perception of themselves as a learner. If they can find success in these subjects, then it literally can change the trajectory of their lives beyond high school.
