My primary approach to teaching is to break down each problem into smaller, easier to tackle pieces, in order to mitigate the overwhelming feeling students can have when faced with schoolwork that they just don't understand. I ensure that they have a good grasp on each small piece before moving on by having them explain their work back to me after I've helped out, and continue giving advice as needed until they get it. I find that it is much more rewarding to be led to the answer, rather than shown it, so I try to encourage and guide more than tell outright. Most importantly, I make sure that they know that there are no "stupid questions" and ensure that they feel comfortable asking for help when they need it.
