About Laura
I have a Masters of Arts in Teaching and taught for 5 years in DC public schools, most of them at a dual-language (Spanish/English) school. I was education program manager at a non-profit for 2.5 years, creating their after-school tutoring program, choosing and making materials, training volunteer tutors, assessing students, and supervising sessions. I have tutored individual students and groups of 2-6 kids for several years, teaching reading, writing, Spanish, German, math, science, and more. I love teaching literacy, especially to kids who need the extra help.

I use different techniques depending on the student's needs and what they already know. I also choose texts based on students' interests and use learning games as much as possible.
I teach using evidence-proven, phonics-based methods including Orton Gillingham. My lessons are typically between 30 and 60 minutes, but can be 20 minutes for very young students.
I'm most experienced with ages 5-8, but have worked with kids ages 4-13. I'm very patient and have extensive experience working with kids with dyslexia and ADHD. I am also experienced teaching English language learners and have taught Spanish literacy as well.
Some typical parts of a reading lesson:
- Phonics review
- Teach and practice a new phonics skill
- Review tricky words from last lessons
- Read a decodable book or a more difficult text, stopping to discuss in order to ensure engagement and comprehension
- Write about the text (anywhere from one word to a couple paragraphs)
Some typical parts of a writing lesson:
- Practice previously taught phonics/spelling skills
- Teach and practice a new phonics/spelling rule
- Depending where we are in the process, outline, research, write, edit, or rewrite a piece of writing
