About Theo

I am a Biology tutor with 4 years of experience and a BSc in Biology with a teaching qualification. I have taught over 140 students at GCSE and A-Level with a specific focus on the examination performance translation challenge — helping students convert genuine biological understanding into well-presented, mark-winning examination responses. About the lesson

My Biology teaching makes the process of biological reasoning as explicit as the content it is applied to, because students who have been taught to think biologically can work their way through genuinely novel questions, while students who have only memorized biological content are helpless when questions are presented in unfamiliar contexts. I address exam mark schemes analytically with every student I work with, because the gap between understanding the biology and scoring the marks available is a real and bridgeable gap that requires specific instructional attention. Homeostasis is taught as the central organizing principle for human physiology, with body temperature regulation, blood glucose regulation, osmoregulation, and gas exchange regulation all developed as specific instantiations of the same general negative feedback principle, because students who understand homeostasis as a unifying principle require far less memorization than those who learn each regulatory system as an independent topic. The immune system is developed with specific care for the distinction between innate and adaptive immunity, because the conceptual complexity of adaptive immunity — clonal selection, antigen-specific responses, immunological memory — is the source of most student confusion and rewards careful, step-by-step conceptual development. I address the mathematical content of A-Level Biology — chi-squared, Hardy-Weinberg, population calculations — as a complete and improvable skill set rather than as a challenging bonus for the most mathematically able students. My teaching goal is a Biology student who scores the marks their knowledge deserves.
