About Sanjana
I am currently in a combined medical program to become a physician, and I have built a strong foundation not only academically but also in how I present myself. In addition to my science background in subjects such as chemistry and biology, I also have 7 years of experience in competitive speech, which is a big part of what gives me confidence in teaching public speaking and interview skills.
I did speech competitively for 7 years, mostly focusing on prose reading and dramatic interpretation. This helped me learn to use emotion, tone, pacing, and body language to actually connect with people instead of just talking at them. At the same time, I also competed in special occasion speaking, which helped me to become more informative and more structural, as opposed to just being expressive. I was part of state series for dramatic interpretation and prose and was a speech coach my senior year.
That experience translates directly into teaching. What makes me different is that I did not start off confident. I used to be extremely paranoid about speaking in front of people, thinking that I was being judged, and I actually hated speaking in front of people. However, I had to grow out of that, and I learned how to do that myself. I learned how to deal with my nervousness, how not to overanalyze myself, and how to turn that fear into something that I could actually use to my advantage. Because I’ve gone through that process myself, I understand exactly what students are feeling, and I know how to help them work through it in a realistic way.
I also understand the high-stakes on medical interviews as I am a first year and have just gone through it. I think I can help students organize their thoughts, help them not sound too scripted, help them reduce their filler words, and help them actually develop real confidence about how they present themselves. I think I can help them with something such as answering questions in a way that actually makes them stand out, rather than sounding too generic.

Being a robotics mentor I’ve witnessed different people’s strengths, weaknesses, backgrounds, and learning methods. The ability to tailor my teaching methods for the student is what made me a successful leader for the teams. However, it wasn't a natural talent. The first year I mentored the robotics team I taught the way I would learn, showing them hands-on and telling them to repeat. While some kids did outstanding and knew exactly what to do, some were completely lost, no longer confident, and stayed quiet. Unknowing what happened, I decided to talk to those kids in private. While each kid had the same reaction of silence, their stories were vastly unique. For some it had to do with feeling incompetent because they couldn't understand, for others it was pressure from parents, and some were just afraid to ask questions. Taking all this information, I spent the next week listening and observing rather than acting. By picking at a student's brain and understanding their background and the way they think, I was able to embrace each identity as diverse strengths and foster genuine relationships. The ability to adjust to the needs of the students, hold onto our stories, yet move to the next with fresh energy, and not let previous emotions affect you currently, all contributed to the development of trust and growth. Learning is holistic, and as a leader you must act based on all aspects of each individual, teaching them to their strengths while improving their weaknesses.
