About Loujin

Hey! My name is Loujin and i’m a final year medical student! This means I'm nearly a fully qualified doctor which is both scary and exciting! My passion for medicine comes from how human biology can be translated into day to day life. Our body processes affect me, you, our parents, siblings, and grandparents every day! Not only that, when you learn how the body works then you can understand what happens when it doesn't and most importantly how to fix it. The scary part is that people have a lot of trust in you!

The love I have for this subject motivated me to find a new type of independence when it came to my studying. I used to heavily rely on teachers at school, but now instead of thinking of them as a hand to hold as I'm crossing a narrow bridge, they are the net to catch me if I fall. This meant learning new skills of how to identify my own weak areas, how to supplement them, how to understand what a question wants and then give a good answer. I believe I am able to teach a student just that!

My experience of exams at school and applying to university were not terrible, however, I look back and can identify many tips I would give myself that I apply to my studies and applications now and have so far made me feel successful. Treating people is a big responsibility which is why it's important to constantly review and improve on yourself. This is something called reflection that can be applied to all aspects of life.

In my own down time I like to play guitar and sing, which I have done for the past 8 years. It's a great stress reliever and allows me to express my creativity.

I hope you now know a little about me!

Overall I adapt a Macro and Micro method.

Macro involves first finding a method suited to the student. This is done through asking a few questions about how they normally study, if they would like to adopt a different method (e.g. visual, verbal, written), and what they expect from myself.

Micro involves then identifying the students weak areas (units, systems, key concepts etc.) and applying them to a spreadsheet that will keep track of their progress. This spreadsheet will be updated constantly with any new areas of difficulty and how confident the student is in understanding, explaining out loud or answering a question in writing. This will also help me prepare for lessons along with my own research into topics, units etc. relevant to the qualification the student is studying for.

Structure will vary for each student depending on the method that is most efficient for them. But in general we will explain a concept, get the student to explain it back, do some questions either together or individually and mark them with suggestions for improvement, and finally, providing supplements outwith the lesson (YouTube videos, online quizzes, helpful apps).

I believe the most important thing to encourage learning is finding a way for the student to be passionate about the subject. There are many resources at the fingertips of this generation that can easily make learning more fun, efficient and relevant.
