About Tom

I am a 3rd year Actuarial Studies and Commerce student at UNSW. I have always excelled at Maths-based subjects and discovered my love for teaching by tutoring my peers throughout my HSC in 2020. I received top graduating marks of Band 6 in Chemistry, E4 in Maths Extension 1 and Extension 2. Automatic Band 6 in Maths Advanced due to Extension 2, but with an average mark of 100%.

Since then, I have continued following my passion, and gained my 3+ years of professional tutoring experience. To me, the greatest feeling in the world is when I watch one of my students have a lightbulb moment, finally understanding both how and why a difficult topic works.

I have also had a diagnosis of ADD since 8 years old, and learned the skills to cope with it during my schooling. I find great joy in passing on this knowledge to other students, both with and without academic disadvantages. I have found great success with many students afflicted with ADD/ADHD and anxiety.

About the lesson

My sessions involve a getting to know you process specifically designed to identify a student’s strengths and weaknesses, both academically or otherwise. Lessons are then tailored to each individual to achieve maximum learning potential and individual growth.

My methodology further involves befriending my students, as I believe a fun environment is conducive to higher active learning and retention, and provides students with a new environment as opposed to yet another teacher-student system.

As a graduate of the new HSC syllabus, I am also more experienced in its specific pitfalls than most tutors, allowing me to guide my students more precisely through the difficult time.

I believe that a tutor is more than a teacher, and that it is my duty to act also as a mentor and a role model to help all of my students become their best selves.

Details

All session types are at a $45/hr rate, but year 7-10 sessions are offered at $40/hr. Additional travel costs are variable based on distance, up to $5.
