Experienced writing professor and published author, new to Berkeley, ready to help!

I have taught over 400 students in classrooms and remotely. My stories and essays have appeared or is forthcoming in Boulevard, Electric Literature Recommended Reading, The Baltimore Review, Words Without Borders, Promethean, and elsewhere. I was named the runner up in Boulevard’s 2023 Emerging Writer contest. I was also a recipient of the Jerome Lowell DeJure Prize in Creative Writing for my collection of short stories in progress, and the winner of the Winter 2020 Fiction Contest at Causeway Lit. I hold an MFA from The City College of New York.

Despite what some of the above may suggest, I struggled as a student for many years. It was not until I began to truly love reading and began to start writing stories of my own that I was able to realize my strengths and gain confidence in an academic setting. I know first hand that everyone learns differently, and that while writing might be difficult (and we may even hate it now and then) it as also one of our greatest tools of expression and self-actualization. Writing does not have to be rigid, and your unique perspective always, always matters. It took me a long time to find my voice. I am committed to helping you find yours.

About the lesson

I know the hardships and joys of this work, and am sensitive to the fact that each person has a unique relationship to writing. I hope to help define that relationship, make it positive, and foster strength and confidence in every individual I teach.

I curate lessons toward goals that students set for themselves. I want each writer to know what they want to achieve, and from there will create dynamic, challenging, and invigorating lessons and assignments that will help manifest those goals. Reading and writing on a recursive, consistent basis is critical, so that the work becomes less intimidating and confidence is built, while necessary skills are practiced and perfected. Most of all, writing and reading should be meaningful and enjoyable, even when it is hard work. Finding materials and methods that not only help but that truly excite each student is what shapes the work we will do together.

Lastly, I tell every student three things I know to be true:

1: Writing will help others know you, but it will also help you know yourself.

2: All writing is creative.

3: Writing will be a part of what you do, no matter what you choose, so mastering it and finding your connection to it will enrich your life and bring your goals within reach.
