About Jackie Wilson

It is essential in working as a tutor to find a rhythm with the learner regardless of background, culture, gender, or personality quirks. However, we must communicate bluntly, clearly, and concisely to get that sync. There are boundaries in my world as a tutor and yours as a learner; we will establish that on day one, working together. I will design the schedule for my tutoring program based on your reality. Your classroom work will have guides such as a syllabus, test schedule, or paper due dates. I will incorporate your needs into all that we will do together. For those with books or articles to be read or edited as a part of the tutoring session, I have experience working at a publishing house. As a Senior editor and editorial writer for a newspaper in Africa (I still work freelance for this newspaper), I offer that experience to you. Those needing tutoring around their employment knowledge base will also have timelines, review deadlines, and co-worker relations that affect how I arrange the information that maps out what I will instruct in tutoring sessions. I plead for questions during our sessions because that is how I see the way you learn best. In my experience, a single question may not be the entire story - I probe questions. It is like an iceberg where what is visible is only a part of the actual mass hidden below the waterline. Reading books in all genres (except horror) is my joy. My superpower is working with you to get your essays done, better understand the plot or theme of an assigned text or get a delightful book ready for literary agents. I can assist weary non-STEM subject secondary school essays, book reports, and MA or PhD students by proofreading their completed work and checking footnotes, endnotes, and indices. On a personal note, my hobbies include crocheting, mastering old-school computer games and puzzles, and dreaming of new worlds to create stories. While I love great parties and packed theaters, I prefer to socialize with a few family members and uber-close friends or be alone so that I can write, edit books, read history, or meditate. I've met many people in my whirlwind life as an anti-apartheid activist, wife of an ambassador, world traveler, workshop instructor, chairman of various boards of directors, Senior Editor, tourism industry CEO, small business advisor, and other roles in many places. Now, I enjoy creating things quietly, with less drama, and dealing with my world as it is, not only as I want it to be.

About the lesson

Working with college prep High School seniors through university students to mature learners who want to author books and articles/essays, learn the AP or Chicago style of editing, perfect research papers (non-STEM), dive into literary works, and proofread long and short documents or stories is satisfying. I am an enthusiastic instructor without being so bubbly that you can't get a word in edgewise. I am a caring instructor fixated on your learning needs.
Step one in my instruction methodology is listening to what you want to learn and need to achieve. I make my lesson plan based on your reality. "Can't" is a brick wall that I try hard to tear down when I work with someone willing to learn.
What sets me apart is that I have traveled to or lived in over forty countries, and I have learned about many cultures, religions, and beliefs and have seen how people are just people. Both of my degrees are in international relations and cover multiple disciplines, which include political science, English literature, writing at all levels, history, and public presentation expertise.
