About Sophie

I’m Sophie, a passionate educator with a B.A. in History and a B.S. in Secondary Education from the University of Vermont. Currently, I tutor full-time at McGlynn Middle School through City Year Boston, an AmeriCorps-affiliated nonprofit. This fall, I’ll begin UMass Boston’s Teach Next Year program, where I’ll continue serving students full-time while pursuing my master’s degree and teaching licensure. My approach is rooted in compassion, equity, and support. I believe in meeting students where they are and tailoring lessons to their readiness level, strengths, and goals. A typical session includes a warm-up to check in on prior knowledge, interactive teaching, guided practice, and space for reflection or questions. I use relatable examples, visual tools, and discussions to make content engaging and accessible. My tutoring is best suited for middle and high school students—particularly in Social Studies, but I also support middle-level Math and English. I have experience working with English language learners and students with support plans, and I strive to create a learning environment where every student feels seen, supported, and capable of success.

About the lesson

As a tutor, I focus on creating a supportive, engaging learning environment tailored to each student’s needs. I use a mix of visual aids, discussion-based learning, and real-world examples to make content meaningful and memorable. My approach is student-centered—I prioritize building confidence alongside academic skills.

A typical lesson begins with a short review to assess understanding, followed by guided practice on new concepts, interactive activities, and time for questions or reflection. I adapt each session based on how the student learns best, whether they need structured guidance or more exploratory learning.

What sets me apart is my experience working with a wide range of learners, including English language learners and students with support plans. I’m patient, flexible, and committed to meeting students where they are, helping them grow both academically and personally.

My lessons are ideal for middle and high school students in Social Studies, as well as middle-level Math and English. I welcome students of all backgrounds and abilities, especially those who benefit from differentiated instruction and a supportive learning space.
