About Adie
My name is Adie Cannon and my teaching philosophy is tri-fold: Love of Music, Persistant Hard Work, and Curiosity for Technical Understanding.
My first priority is that each of my students love what they are working on; whether it's technical or musical, playing an instrument should always be fun and never feel like a chore. I designed much of my curriculum around music "games" and by encouraging my students to personally select pieces from popular and classical repertoire that they enjoy.
Second, improving at a skill to achieve meaningful goals takes determination, strategy, and strong practice habits. Hard work is imperative to making progress; so, I structure lessons in a way to help students find that balance between hard work and resultant satisfaction.
Finally, I place a high emphasis on my students achieving a well-rounded musical education including note reading, ear training, music theory, history, composition, and performance techniques. These help a student see the "big picture" to their practice and add a fun spice of variety to the inherant technical demands of learning an instrument!

The skills required to learn music are universally valuable: patience, perseverance, creativity, curiosity, teamwork, positivity, etc. I value my work because I know that my students are growing not only as musicians but as people and I am fortunate to be able to witness and inspire their improvement.
I have achieved my Bachelor's of Music Degree in Viola Performance from the University of Arizona's "Fred Fox" School of Music, where I am currently pursuing my Master's of Music degree. After an early performing career, I have since been teaching violin and viola in Tucson through private lessons, Tucson Junior Strings, Tucson Summer Music, Tucson Symphony Women's Association, and as a guest clinician. Each student receives their first session for free because the first lesson is an excellent time to get to know one another and develop goals and a plan for upcoming lessons.
After some casual chit-chat to meet one another, our first lesson will include a review of my teaching philosophy and goals as well as the student's interests/goals. I may also listen to hear about the student's musical experience, listen to their playing, if the student feels comfortable. This gives me the information to get started on forming a plan for the student's musical education in upcoming lessons!
For some students, the first lesson may also include tips on how to acquire an instrument and any other questions they may have regarding practical details.
My music studio consists of an incredible and diverse group of students! I've worked with students of all ages, levels of ability, musical interests, etc.
My viola students have been accepted as music majors in university and I am very proud of all that my current and past students have accomplished so far!
It's important to find a teacher whose priorities align with your own. Each student is unique in their musical goals, interests, experiences, and learning styles - and teachers similarly.
I know my values don't align with every student and am always happy to recommend colleagues with whom I believe you would be more likely to achieve your plans in an area that is not my forte.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Please don't hesitate to ask all questions you may have! The biggest block to education is misunderstanding. If you are not interested in a topic, or not understanding the assignment, or if it's too easy/boring, or if you're having a problem the teacher may not be aware of, or if you need a bigger challenge, or increased variety.... always ask!
In private lessons, it is exclusively about the student benefitting from the teacher's experience and facilitating that process via clear communication. Please don't be embarassed but be proactive.
