About Emma
I teach all different styles; classical, bluegrass, improvisation/jazz, rock, folk, hip-hop, you name it. I can help students learn whatever type of music they are interested in, using strong foundations and helping students get comfortable on the instrument. Because of these alternative styles, I also teach electric violin/viola.
The most important part of teaching for me, is helping students learn to express themselves creatively through music.
I started in college, when I needed some extra cash, and I fell in love! I had so much fun teaching kids the wonders of music I've continued since then.
I received my B.A. in violin performance from the University of Vermont. I have been playing violin for 21 years, and I have attended numerous workshops including, the Starling DeLay Violin Symposium at Julliard, the Creative Strings Workshop in Columbus Ohio, and the Training for Viola and Violin Teachers with Mimi Zweig at the University of Indiana.

I assess the student's familiarity with music and string instruments. If they are a beginner, we play games and do exercises to get the student comfortable with me and the instrument.
If the student has been playing for a while, I assess what techniques we will need to fix and improve over time, and give them exercises and play improv games.
All ages, all abilities. 2 years-elderly adults, beginners-advanced. Most of my expertise is with beginners-intermediate students. I have worked with children with learning disabilities and physical challenges as well.
BE PATIENT WITH YOURSELF. Especially with adult students. Learning violin is a life-long endeavor and you're never "done". It's going to to take a LOT of practice and work. But of course, I know how to make it fun :)))
I taught violin at a camp called Camp Common Ground. I taught mostly very young students (3-7 years), and we had daily lessons for 15 minutes each. It was so fun because we got to play violin games, and I showed them the joy and expression of the violin even if they didn't play already!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Does the student have a schedule which will permit them to practice daily, even if it is only for 15 minutes or so? Practice time is essential to learning any instrument, and lessons also will NOT be sufficient for a student to learn the instrument. Practice is CRUCIAL.

Details
I charge $80/hour lesson in the student's home. If the student comes to my studio the charge is $75/lesson. For young children I will consider 30 or 45 minute lessons and adjust costs from there.
For online lessons, I also charge $75/hour lesson. Again, shorter times may be available at lower rates upon request.
