About Alyssa

I have been teaching violin, viola, and piano for 7 years and am a dedicated and caring teacher and performer. I hold a BM in violin performance at the University of Michigan and am currently getting a MM in music from The Juilliard School. As a teacher, I focus on ensuring my students are well rounded technically and musically and that they enjoy their lessons and time spent with their instrument.

In addition to my private students, I have taught ages 6+ at youth orchestras, public school orchestra programs, and summer music festivals. I teach violin, viola, and piano and work with beginner through advanced students.

I love teaching because music has been an extremely positive factor in my life, and I hope to help my students have a similar experience. I really enjoy seeing my students improve and make visible progress, and am excited to check in with them every week and form a strong relationship over time.

Teaching was something that I always wanted to do, and when I was in highschool I was given to opportunity to tutor some of the younger students in the program. I loved doing this, and when I went to college for music I started teaching my own private students. I've been doing it ever since!

About the lesson

I have worked with beginning, intermediate, and advanced students and have experience with both child and adult students.

Additionally, I have experience teaching music to special needs children and adults.

Look for someone who has the qualifications that prove they are musically and technically advanced enough to help their students improve in the long run. This often means they have an undergraduate or masters degree in music performance, but people with education backgrounds or other teaching certifications are often wonderful teachers as well. Additionally, look for someone who has high standards but will be kind and encouraging to their students. Most, if not all students respond better to kindness and patience and improve quicker if their teacher makes them feel comfortable in their lessons.

Most importantly, you want someone who will balance repertoire vs technique. If a strong technical foundation isn't put into place when a student is a beginner, it can be very challenging to fix any technical issues later on. A student can only access their full musicality if they have the technique to do it!

I recently went to my first live concert as an audience member since the Covid-19 pandemic. The amount of positive energy in the room between performers and audience was invigorating and made me remember why music making is so necessary in our society. For a few hours, it lets people escape their lives and enjoy something special.

It was a wonderful concert, and being an audience member made me remember how happy I am to be a musician.

What kind of instrument should I have? Is my instrument of good quality?

Are my goals long term or short term?

What role do I want music to play in my life? Is this mostly for fun, or do I want to become a professional musician?

What kinds of music am I interested in? Do I want to learn music theory, or just how to play my instrument?

What kind of a teacher would I benefit from the most?
