About Drew

The Drew Robertson Music Studio is an intensive, exciting, and holistic training ground where student artists hone their musical abilities and increase their knowledge on musical topics. Students perform regularly in studio class, community outreach events, and in recital. Through the study of music, students not only experience the joy and satisfaction of self-expression but also develop essential life skills.

I began teaching private lessons and as an orchestral assistant in high school. During my conservatory studies, I taught as an assistant with the Cleveland Institute Preparatory Program; leading sectionals and rehearsals. After moving to Rochester, NY for my graduate studies, I taught at the Kanack School of Music for three years, building up a large and successful studio, leading group classes, and teaching music courses. I then led the orchestra program at McQuaid Jesuit High school for three years, conducting the two orchestras, teaching studio lessons, and teaching general music classes. After budget cuts all but eliminated the music program at McQuaid, I taught at The Harley School for one year, preparing to begin my own studio in the greater D.C. area. In October 2017, the Drew Robertson Music Studio opened in Manassas Park, VA and has rapidly built up a dedicated following of excited parents and students.

I began my musical studies at the age of four on the piano and began playing the viola at age seven. My foundational lessons were with Leslie VanBecker, the Principal Violist of the Grand Rapids Symphony. I continued my musical studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Mark Jackobs of the Cleveland Orchestra. Following my undergraduate studies, I pursued a Master's degree in Music Therapy from Nazareth College of Rochester while taking supplemental courses at the Eastman School of Music. Ultimately deciding to pursue teaching instead of music therapy, I have continued to take pedagogy courses and attend conferences to continually improve my teaching and increase my fluency in various methods and pedagogical approaches. Following my graduate studies, I have completed Suzuki Violin training in Books 1-6, attended conferences such as the American String Teacher's Association National Conference, International Viola Congress, New York State School Music Association Conference, and the AP National Conference. In 2015 and 2017, I participated in the Starling-DeLay Symposium on Violin Studies, one of the most prestigious opportunities for teachers.

About the lesson

When an interested student asks about lessons, I always offer a free trial lesson first. The trial lesson allows potential students to see how I teach and decide if my studio would be a good fit for them. It also allows me to see how potential students learn, and how I can create a path toward success drawing from the various methods and pedagogy traditions I have studied. From that first lesson, I am determined to find the best way to help each student achieve their musical goals.

My extensive training in performance, pedagogy, and music therapy allows me to work with students of every age and ability. I have taught beginners as young as 2 and as old as 68 and have taught students who just want to enjoy playing and those who want to play in competitions. I have taught students with physical handicaps such as limited motor control, blindness, and partial deafness; and have taught students with learning delays, attention-deficit disorders, and autism spectrum disorders. With every student, I work to find the best way for the violin or viola to help them realize their personal and musical goals.

Decide what your goals are for musical study first; do you want music to be just another fun activity, or do you want the violin to become an essential part of your child's life? Take trial lessons with several teachers, then decide whose teaching style matches your child's goals and learning style.

Over the last three years, I have been working to complete teacher training in all ten books of the Suzuki Method for violin. This project has required taking courses at music festivals and institutes across the United States with some of the most accomplished and established teachers. In all, this project is like pursuing a second Master's degree with schools located all around the country!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Consider both long and short-term goals for your student. If you want to see your child become a capable musician, consider how much time commitment you can manage. In addition to lessons, consider working with your teacher to find an instrument and setup that allows your child to play comfortably. Lastly, home practice is where the learning truly takes place, so set aside a place in your home for music and invest time every day so your child can develop into an excellent young artist.

Unlike music schools or studios, the Drew Robertson Music Studio does not charge for individual lessons. Instead, there is a flat tuition, and students are encouraged to take as many lessons as possible. This allows students to progress extremely quickly while eliminating all the hassles of complicated policies. Rather than penalizing motivated students by charging for extra lessons, these studio policies reward aspiring musicians!

If you have a motivated child, this tuition policy is the perfect way to ensure they progress on their instrument as rapidly as possible. If you attend one 30-minute lesson each week for the 10-week term, the effective rate is $48 per lesson. However, these policies allow you to schedule two or three lessons each week, which decreases the effective per-lesson cost to under $20 per lesson. These lesson policies are not designed to maximize profits; they are designed to allow your child to become an incredible young artist!
