About Leah

The importance of the arts has been an unchanging staple of society— it binds us together through both our logical and artistic senses and clears the path to new ways of thinking and creative processes. Music has the power to soothe the soul, body, and mind if one allows it to permeate through the system. It is therefore my overarching goal to help students achieve a deeper understanding and recognition of themselves through music. There is a great deal of importance in allowing music to effect and run through the entire body from the beginnings of musical development. I have personally struggled with this facet of being a musician in the past and so I understand the struggles of allowing oneself the vulnerability to connect to art and music. Yet, I have found that the personal and artistic payoff is well worth the hard work put into the art form.

On the topic of hard work, I am completely invested in cultivating a growth mindset for each student. In detail, this mindset is centered on the positive aspects of the learning process. It encourages students to explore the things they find difficult with curiosity instead of self doubt; flexibility and patience in place of dogmatic routine; and out of self encouragement rather than out of fear. I love to help students flourish through their own hard work and perseverance. In essence, my duties as the teacher are to enable students to find their artistic voices through showing them the proper tools and methods. There are always times when direct instruction are required and are the most helpful as well. One of the best aspects of teaching is the limitless styles and combinations of learning. While certain techniques work for some students, others may not— each individual is unique in their own right and so the way they learn is, too. Through my experience teaching, I’ve come to learn that each student offers a myriad of talents and strong suits, regardless of their current level. Talent is a broadly reaching word and can apply to many aspects of the art of violin such as one’s receptiveness to new information, resilience in adversity, or their pure passion for what they love about music. In any case, I am committed to helping each student grow in a way that fosters a positive bond with music and with the violin.

About the lesson

Unlike many traditional classical teaching methods, I love to introduce reading music and playing with others very early on in the process. Along with learning the proper technique of how to hold the violin and bow, I enjoy showing students the basics of how to read sheet music and play duets with me accompanying them by the first few lessons.
