About Rachel

I've been playing music for over twenty years and teaching in some form or another for ten years (as of 2017!) I specialize in Celtic fiddle and harp, and I also trained in classical violin for a number of years and love helping students learn classical music through the Suzuki method. I've played with numerous bands as both lead fiddle and backup fiddle/harp in the Sacramento and Boise areas, and have played at venues such as the Knitting Factory, the Egyptian Theater, the Nampa Civic Center, and the Sapphire Room. My current band is called Beyond the Burren, which features Celtic, Scandinavian, and Appalachian music played by myself and three other talented multi-instumentalists.

My lessons include everything from sight reading to learning by ear, theory, fundamental chords and improv, and performance opportunities as well.

I love taking on students ages 10 and up, at any level. You're never too old to start learning, and everyone from absolute beginners to seasoned pros are welcome!

I love helping folks along their musical journey at whatever level they are. Building students' confidence and a love for the music they play is extremely rewarding to me!

I always enjoyed sharing my knowledge in classes, workshops, and summer camps while growing up. As far as music lessons go, I began when I was 17 by offering extra-curricular tutoring for young students who needed help with their practices in between lessons. I then moved to offering private lessons and have been happily tutoring ever since! I also taught the Celtic music workshops at Weiser during the National Oldtime Fiddlers Competition in 2016 and 2017 and led the Irish music history class at Irish Dance Idaho's 2015 dance camp.

I have over twenty years of musical lessons, education, and performance with piano, fiddle, and harp. I've had the fortune to learn from great Celtic fiddlers such as Hanneke Cassel, Randall Bays, Athena Tergis, Laura Risk, Dave Daley, and Calum MacKinnon; my oldtime and classical education came from Katie Glassman (National Oldtime Fiddler finalist), Danita Gardener (National Oldtime Fiddler champion), and Megan Wheeler Portsche (Classical Music major at BSU, studied under Professor Craig Purdy.)

About the lesson

Brand new students are started with a curriculum that covers all the basics of getting to know their instrument, reading music, and learning by ear. Students who have prior experience spend a few minutes playing what they know and love in their first lesson, then we use their past experience as a platform for new techniques, songs, or exercises.

I've worked with absolute beginners all the way up to advanced, classically-trained students who were looking for other genres to open up their tune repertoire.

Don't be afraid to ask questions of any kind! I love helping out, and am perfectly happy to answer all music-related questions. Also, don't feel like you need to know more than you all ready know or be anything more than who you all ready are. Everyone's on their own musical journey and where you are is exactly where you're supposed to be. No good teacher will judge you for where you currently are in your journey. Taking lessons is just one exciting step that moves you further along!
