About William

Music is the biggest driving force in my life, and I want to give back to my community as much as it has given to me. I want to teach the next generation of performers and give the public inspirational performances no matter the situation.

Since moving from California to Arizona in 2016, I have played with distinguished groups such as The Phoenix Symphony, Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Pacific Symphony Orchestra, and MusicaNova Orchestra.

In addition to his freelance career in California and Arizona, I have had memorable performance experiences playing in a summer festival with the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckinridge, Colorado, as well as a ten-day tour in China, where I was featured in concert halls in Beijing and Shanghai.

I have also been fortunate in studying with distinguished teachers such as Ben Nguyen of The Phoenix Symphony, David Hickman at Arizona State University, and Barry Perkins of the Pacific Symphony Orchestra.

I started teaching early in high school. My first instrument was piano and I was proficient enough to teach young children funamentals of the instrument. When I became very serious about my studies with trumpet, colleagues and students would come to me to seek some guidance and I was able to translate my experience from teaching piano into teaching trumpet.

I have my Bachelors degree in Trumpet Performance from Arizona State University and have been performing professionally and teaching privately for about 8 years.

About the lesson

I start off by asking them questions such as: How long have have you been playing? Is trumpet your first instrument? What are the goals you have with music or trumpet playing?

If the student has only had the instrument for a few days or a week then I'll start off by getting them set up correctly with the mouthiece placement and taking them through the most basic exercises that only start off with 3 notes at most. It might take from a few days to a couple weeks to really be able to play really short songs with a correct set up. I make sure to let the student know that it's a really slow start at first but it becomes easier each day as long as they put in around 15 to 30 minutes a day with practice.

If the student is around elementary to middle school age, I like to make sure that the parent(s) know what the student is working and how they should practice it. After about a month, I can start assigning the students with slightly longer material and fundamental exercises that will best suit them. By this time I can gauge what exercises the student needs to see constant improvement and I'll assemble a personal packet tailored for their own development.

I have worked primarily with beginner students (elementary to middle school age). I do have experience with high school students and have worked with students that were in their 30's and 40's that were looking to play trumpet as a hobby.

Look for a teacher that has your best interest and is willing to work with you and your needs and doesn't just follow a formula for how they teach every one of your students.

I was asked to do a masterclass at a charter school recently where I coached a class of 12 middle schoolers for 2 hours and 4 high schoolers for another 2 hour block. It was inspiring to be able to work with that many students that wanted to play trumpet in their school and it was a lot of fun for me and them to get to learn how to play the instrument in a musical and easy way.

Yes, I usually charge 30 for a half hour and 45 for a full hour. Their is an added 10 dollar fee if I am traveling to the students house.
