About Lauren

I teach various types of vocal performance, including public speaking, not just standing on a stage, reading lines. I also will be monologue coaching for the aspiring actor and act as editor for a speechwriter. I also can teach beginner and intermediate swing dancing.

I have been an actor and writer for as long as I can remember. Even before I can remember, apparently I was acting out and 'fixing' scenes from my favorite movies.

When I was in high school, I was the name of my tech crew, because they always had to turn my microphone, as well as any of my scene partner's, way down. Several times, my mic stopped working altogether....and no one noticed. Essentially, I am good at projecting my voice, and I can teach others how to do it.

And, just in case, I can also teach self defense.

I started teaching swimming when I was about eleven, on my swim team, mostly for something to do. In college, I knew how to swing dance, and so the first year, I mostly acted as a volunteer to show moves and help where needed in the school's swing dance club. By my sophomore year, I was creating lesson plans and executing them on a weekly basis.

In college, I double majored in theatre. I took acting classes of course, but also classes like 'theatre for young audiences' which involved a lot of discussion of how to perform for and even teach children.

In college I also taught swing dancing for all four years. Prior to that, I taught swim lessons. It isn't related to what I teach now, but it does mean in have experience teaching children.

About the lesson

I like to meet with them first, in a neutral location, to see what their goals are and if we are compatible as student and teacher. Each student needs something different, and a preliminary, non-teaching meeting helps me to figure out the best way of teaching them.

Once I have a basic lesson plan worked out, we set up a practice schedule. I will work with the student for the allotted time, and then give them something to work on for the next lesson.

Mostly young children or people in my peer group, depending on what it was I was teaching at the time.

Make sure they will be working FOR you. Someone else might be better or have more expertise, but they don't necessarily have your best interests at heart. You need someone flexible and willing and able to be there for you. Every person is different. That means that some teachers, no matter how brilliant, might not work for you personally. That's okay. You can even like a teacher but acknowledge that they aren't the right instructor for you. You have to look out for yourself and your own best interests when it comes to finding the right teacher.
