About Emma
I am an education and Spanish language fanatic, and desire to share this love with my students! I am also passionate about helping others, especially when it comes to helping them understand Spanish, overcoming learning obstacles, and achieving their learning goals.
When I was 16 years old, I started teaching a Global Art class to elementary students at a local homeschool group. 2018-2019 I taught Latin American Art and a Fine Arts class, and 2019-2020 I taught Global Art again at a different homeschool group. 2018-2019 I tutored a 5 year old in Spanish. 2016-2020 I had multiple opportunities leading a classroom of elementary aged children at a daycare.
Teaching is still a passion of mine. This year I am teaching an elementary, middle school, and highschool African American Art History class, and an Elementary Spanish class at a homeschool group. I will also be teaching highschool Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 from home, and I will be tutoring Spanish.
I've studied Spanish extensively within the past five years. In highschool I took Introduction to Spanish, Spanish 1, Spanish 2, and Conversational Spanish. So far during my college experience, I've taken Intermediate Spanish Grammar Review/Composition, and Intermediate Spanish/Latin American Film. I passed all these classes with A's, and enjoyed the grammar, vocabulary, conversation, and culture learning opportunities provided in each class.
As far as tutoring experience goes, during 2018-2019 I tutored a 5 year old in Spanish. I also have 3 years worth of experience teaching elementary and middle school students cultural-based art classes at two homeschool groups. During my 4 years working at a daycare, I have led projects, activities, and educational "circle time" for elementary aged children. This year I am teaching an online middle/high school Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 class.

1. Form a professional relationship with the student. I desire for all my students to feel respected, feel confident in their ability to learn, grow comfortable working with me, and feel like they have a safe space where no question is a "stupid question".
2. Form a professional relationship with the parent/guardian (if applicable). I want the student's parent/guardian to know their child is getting the one-on-one guidance they need to improve in the areas of Spanish that they're struggling in. The parent/guardian should know that the student achieving their learning goals is my top priority, and that their child is working with a kind, patient, and respectful person.
3. Learn information about the student that will allow me to become a better tutor. It is helpful to know specifically why the student it seeking tutoring, what areas they need improvement in, what their individual learning style is, and if they have any learning difficulties. Knowing this information allows me to become a better tutor, as I will be able to modify my methods of information delivery to fulfill the student's needs, which are unique to each student.
4. Set a list of achievable goals. Once I know what areas the student is struggling in, I like to set a small list of necessary steps that allow students to achieve different goals, and improve their understanding of the Spanish language. Depending on the age of the student, I will make this list of goals primarily with the parent/guardian. With older students, I prefer to create a list of goals together, so they can learn how to set and achieve goals on their own, a skill that will prove useful in the future. The parent/guardian will always be informed of set goals and their achievement progress.
5. Prepare myself to help the student improve. Once goals are set and I know more about the student's needs, I like to step back and assess the situation, figuring out what teaching methods I should use to help the student reach their goals.
6. Actively work towards helping the student achieve their goals. This can be done in a number of ways based on what goals the student has set, but most of the time in order to achieve this, I will try to help them understand the subject more by providing easy-to-grasp examples, practice tests, and fun games that reinforce information learned so far, and allow the student to practice applying what they know to every-day situations.
I have worked with elementary, middle school, and high school students.
A student looking to hire a Spanish teacher should always look for a teacher who...
1. Is able to help them. A student seeking help with advanced Spanish 3 homework shouldn't hire a tutor who only has experience with beginner/Spanish.
2. Really cares about the student's feelings, goals, and learning outcome
3. Treats their student professionally and with respect. A teacher should NEVER make a student feel insignificant, bothersome, or "stupid".
4. Is very patient. Learning and teaching a language can be very tedious at times, so a patient teacher is a MUST.
5. Is easy to get a hold of. The tutor should respond relatively quickly (at least within 24 hours) to any e-mails sent by the student and/or parent/guardian.
