About Raymond

I am a student tutor for elementary school to high school topics, and I am currently a rising senior. I really want to build a connection with students, as everyone can learn from those around them. I am very open and accepting of everyone, and I encourage students who may feel different or ostracized to speak up and talk openly. In tutoring, I believe in the socratic method, and I weave that into my work along with other methods of teaching that allow students to think critically and to take their learning into their own hands. I believe this helps students feel encouraged to study further as it proves that they can indeed learn something without being directly led by others. Truly, all students can achieve anything they want to achieve; sometimes, they just need to know, first, that they are able to achieve it. I love helping student understand new topics because I want to inspire them to see learning in a different way. I want students to see that learning something that interests them is truly fun, and I encourage them to look past school grades and to think deeply about why they enjoy learning the topic they are learning and how it connects to the real world. I am currently a math tutor and a student writing consultant at Shady Side Academy, and I have had the pleasure of working with many students already in my last two to three years of service.

I was asked by my math teacher to tutor a student in math before I officially became a math tutor. Additionally, I was also asked to help peer review students' essays and papers before I officially became a scribe. I found that I really enjoyed helping others learn not only school concepts but also thinking techniques and the "essence" of learning, so I grew fond of tutoring.

I am a math tutor and a scribe (a writing consultant and peer editor) at Shady Side Academy, and I have worked with students on both a one-off and long-term basis. I enjoy helping students understand certain concepts when they are challenging, as practice is sometimes all students need to solidy a concept. I have discovered through my years of tutoring that nearly every student I have worked with is capable of learning the concepts that initially seem challenging to them. Learning challenging concepts can often be frustrating, and I emphasize in my work that everything will be ok! Additionally, I have adopted a multi-routed approach, weaving flexibility into my work and helping students to make connections between concepts by explaining topics in different ways. Learning a concept is only complete when the student fully grasps it and can make connections between it and other interconnected concepts.

About the lesson

Students learn best through self-discovery and knowing that they can do something that can seem challenging at the beginning. But more importantly, on this journey of self-discovery, the exercise of genuine curiosity and interest not only speeds up the learning process but also grounds the material in real-world context and results in the development of a passion to learn the material. This self-motivation to learn is something that nobody can force onto students, but I strive to spark this passion by learning more about what matters to students and by challenging them to think about one topic in different ways.

I have worked with students from elementary school to high school, some on a one-off and others on a long-term basis. Students have been directed to me by some of my teachers, and these students often have a few particular topics they need to learn before jumping up to a higher-level class. I have worked with students who take pride in being "athletes" and "scholars," and I especially enjoy working with students who take initiative for their own learning.

I offer help with learning elementary to secondary-school concepts. There are many, many tutors available for this range of expertise, but the most important factor is whether or not they inspire students to learn a topic through encouragement and challenges rather than a straight-forward memorization approach. I urge students looking for assistance to consider, too, whether or not their prospective tutor is interested in helping students, as this can make a big difference in a student's overall experience with the tutor. Nevertheless, a personality "fit" is also something to consider!

During distance learning, the director of my chamber choir—an outstanding teacher!—tasked me with the job of organizing a virtual performance. Despite being unable to talk to one another directly, we collaborated and contacted the members of the chamber choir before receiving recordings and creating a wonderful performance at the end! It was impressive how we were able to sing "together" despite being hundreds of miles apart—even across the globe!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The most important questions are both directed toward the students, themselves. Students should think about why exactly they are approaching a teacher for help. What kind of help do they need? Do they need help studying? Understanding a concept? Making connections? How much help do they need? Can they estimate how much help they need? Most importantly, can they pinpoint exactly what they do not understand and gather what they do understand before approaching the teacher? Teachers can offer more specific advice if students approach them with specific questions rather than with a broad "I don't understand," but definitely sometimes that's the only option.

Nope! I enjoy tutoring because I enjoy helping students, so there isn't a set-in-stone "price" of my work, as it is essentially based on gratuity. If students benefit from my work and want to set up a more formal, long-term schedule, we can establish a more formal "pricing" system as needed.
