About Erin
I love helping students find their voice and learning how to share thier love of music with others! I've been teaching private voice and piano for over 22 years, and with my experiences in performing with top opera companies and as an international soloist, I can help you achieve true artistry in your vocal technique.
I concentrate on proper breathing, strengthening and balancing the vocal registers, and eliminating interfering tensions in your singing so that your voice is not only consistent and reliable, but beautiful and free so you can focus on expressing the music.
I also work with students on how to be expressive, how to move on stage, and how to interpret the music and character so you can confidently perform on stage.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Voice from Miami University in Oxford, OH, and a Master in Music Education in Piano from University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point. I have performed with Palm Beach Opera, Florida Grand Opera, and have sung as soloist with various choirs for large choral works such as Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem, Faure's Requiemn, Handel's Messiah, Bach's Jauchzet Gott in Allen Landen, and many other works.
For piano, I have accompanied singers and instrumentalists for competitions, recitals, and musicals. I work with piano students to understand the fundamentals of playing piano including proper technique and introducing repertoire that progressively introduces new skills to help the student achieve mastery in piano. Ear training, sight reading, and theory are all a part of training as well, to develop the student's musicianship. I also teach how to play piano expressively, so that not only can they execute the music tehcnically well, but also move their audiences.
I love working with individuals to find out what they are passionate about and to help them in their musical journey. We all have strengths and weaknesses, and as a teacher, I feel it's important to strike a balance between playing on the strengths while also building up the weaknesses so the student can be a well-rounded musician - capable of achieveing whatever they want in music. I love helping students explore new music and broaden their horizons by developing musical fluency, so if they want to learn something by ear or from lead sheet, they can, or if they want to learn a piece from sheet music, they can do that with the same ease. This fluency comes from a true understanding of how we learn and perceive music, with specific techniques developed by pedagogue, conductor, and composer Marianne Ploger.
I was encouraged to go into teaching by my voice teacher, Barbara Lattimer, and my piano teacher, Ann Applegate. I was in the process of completing my bachelor's degree in voice and was continuing my studies with both of these teachers who recognized my ability to not only perform, but to understand how to communicate with others on tehcnique and musicality.
Through my performing experiences, years of teaching, and independent studying with Jeremy Silver, Linda Roark-Strummer, and Peter Strummer, I have a deep understanding of how to lead singers to an authentic sound that is unique to that individual that is healthy, free, clear, and strong.

I talk with a new student first to find out what their goals are, what they feel they need ot work on, and any concerns that they have about their voice. Then I listen to them sing through a song of their choosing to assess where they are vocally, and let them know what my plan is to help them achieve their goals and free up their voice.
I have worked with all ages and levels of ability for both voice and piano. However, because of the physical limitations of the voice in young ages, I prefer not to start voice students until around the age of 10 or so. I find it's best for children of younger ages to learn about music through piano and singing in groups, then pursue more rigorous study when the body has matured more.
For anyone looking to begin studying voice or piano, I think the best thing you can do is listen to the advice of the teacher. There is a lot of great free advice out on the internet, but there is also some bad advice or advice that doesn't apply to your situation. A qualified teacher who can hear you and assess what you're doing is far more valuable than some random person on the internet, so one must be careful who they choose to listen to.
I recently accompanied voice students and a choir in the Sacred Music Competition in Orlando. It was my pleasure to accompany the students of my friend and colleague, Jessica Valdez, all of whom placed and many of them earned first place. My piano student, Joquin Valdez won 2nd place for piano.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
For piano students, the biggest question is do you have an instrument? If not, please consult with the teacher prior to purchasing, as not all piano-like instruments are actually pianos, and you don't want to waste your money on something that you find out when you start lessons won't suffice.
Also, consider that daily practice is imperative for progress and success at any instrument. It's better to do 10 minutes every day than 70 minutes on day per week - so look at your schedule and carve out the time needed to make your lessons work for you.
