About Steven

With 10 years of professional singing experience both in the greater New York CIty area and around the country, coupled with my studies in the Advanced Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy program at NYU, I bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to my teaching. My extensive background as a performer and a teacher is my toolbox, one that will help you, the student, achieve your individual goals with your singing, whether you're a novice beginner, a graduating senior considering collegiate study in the arts, or even a budding professional singer.

No matter your personal goals, whether your musical tastes are opera or pop, musical theater or contemporary music, I'm here to encourage you on every step of your musical journey!

Currently an Adjunct Instructor of Voice at The College of New Jersey

Performance credits:

-Appearances with the New York Philharmonic, American Classical Orchestra, Seraphic Fire, True Concord Voices and Orchestra, and Spire Chamber Ensemble, among many other ensembles across the country

-Frequent recitals and concert performances with the Brooklyn Art Song Society and LyricFest

-Training and Apprentice Artist programs with the Tanglewood Music Center, Aspen Music Festival, Opera Saratoga, Songfest at Colburn, and the American Bach Soloists Academy

Education Credits:

Advanced Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy, New York University - 2020

Specialist of Music in Voice, University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, 2012

Master of Music in Voice, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, 2010

Bachelor of Music Education in Saxophone, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, 2008

Every time I experience a breakthrough, or an "Aha!" moment with my students, it brings me so much joy and satisfaction in the work that I do. It's absolutely rewarding to see my students grow bit-by-bit, learning what they're capable of with their singing and their musicianship, and seeing them get excited about their progress. As a teacher, I see myself not only as an expert, but also as your cheerleader and coach, encouraging you in both your triumphs and your struggles.

I always approach an initial consultation as a "Getting To Know You" session!

During our initial session, I want to know about your background as a singer and musician, what your goals are with your singing, and where you see yourself going with your studies. I'll also lead you through some basic vocal exercises, and you may also bring in a prepared song of your choice for me to see where your skills are at that current time.

All of these factors help give me a snapshot of you as a person and as a singer, both of which will help me tailor an individualized plan for you and your goals. There is no simple "One Size Fits All" approach to studying singing. Everyone has different needs based on their current ability levels and their goals, so it's my job as your teacher to come up with a game plan that helps you realistically achieve your full potential!

I've worked with students of all ability levels, from beginning students who are studying singing for the fun of it, to intermediate and advanced young music and theatre students at The College of New Jersey and NYU's Steinhardt and Tisch schools

As someone seeking a teacher, here are some important questions I encourage you to ask a potential teacher:

- What is your background both as a performer and as a teacher? Do you have any educational background or a degree in either singing or vocal pedagogy?

- How long have you been teaching privately?

- How many students do you currently have in your studio?

- What is your attendance and cancellation policy?

- Do you encourage live, in-person lessons, or do you also offer virtual lessons?

- What are some of your students' notable accomplishments?

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
- What are my goals with singing lessons? What do I hope to accomplish with my studies?

- What kind of repertoire do I want to be focusing on?

- Is studying voice a short-term goal or a long-term investment for me?
