About Annie

The Vocal Lab is a community of teachers and artists with a passion for exploring the authentic voice and developing personal artistry. We are dedicated to nurturing vocal and artistic growth through our lessons and classes, as well as providing our students with opportunities to perform where possible.

All of our teachers possess at minimum a master's degree, and have at least 5 years of teaching experience. Our coaches have at minimum a B.M., are either currently enrolled in their M.M., or have extensive performing and pedagogy experience. Our teaching staff has attended the following conservatories: Berklee College of Music NYU - New York University Columbia University Westminster Choir College Shenandoah University Brandeis University Oberlin Conservatory

About the lesson

We offer a 20 minute Zoom consultation with our scheduling desk to discuss your needs and give you an overview of our practice. Prospective students are encouraged to prepare any questions they may have. We want all of our students to feel as though they've found the right teacher to meet their needs. At the consultation, you may schedule a 60 minute introductory lesson.

During the introductory lesson, your instructor will assess your needs to begin developing a curriculum tailored specifically to you. We have a database of resources for our students to access and utilize, should your instructor feel you might benefit from this. You will be asked to prepare a piece you feel comfortable with and enjoy singing. Your instructor will assign exercises to address specific technical issues, and discuss your artistic goals. It is important to us that our students feel comfortable and free to experiment with sound, as we experiment A LOT! It is also crucial that our students understand why we choose to assign specific technical exercises, as our curriculum is cumulative and intentional.

- Children (age 6-13; more of an introduction to voice and music appreciation), adolescents 14-17 - Beginners with little or no musical experience - Intermediate students with some background in musical study and/or performance - Advanced singers actively auditioning for musical theater and/or performing regularly - Middle and high school students currently auditioning for high school or college admissions - Singer/songwriters (all genres, including pop, rock, jazz, blues, R&B, rap, hip-hop, country, classical) - Hobbyists looking for a fun approach to music education We also provide the following: - College admissions counseling/advising - Recording studio voice coaching (off site - extra charge) - Assistance with assembling an audition book - Audition prep - Lessons in composition and songwriting - Acting coaching - Performance opportunities

Hone in on what you are looking for within voice and music instruction and ask a lot of questions! Make sure your teacher is qualified in their field. While holding a degree in performance or pedagogy does not automatically make one a great teacher, it does provide the necessary fundamentals a teacher needs to efficiently and effectively condition and train. Communicate with your teacher your teaching preferences (i.e.: are you looking for a teacher who is science or image based? A bubbly attitude? A collaborator as well as a teacher? Someone to guide you artistically?) Ask your prospective teacher what their teaching style and approach is. It's important to remember that not every teacher is right for every student, and that is quite beautiful! It's necessary to understand what you are looking for within your classes and communicate expectations, as well as ask any and all questions you might have of your instructor.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Is there a deadline for your studies and/or project? What are your goals - technically and artistically? Do you have specific goals in mind (i.e.: a concert, audition or album release), or do you need help putting these into place? What experience does your prospective teacher have in your area of interest? Ask for examples as well as how they approached the situation with other students.
