About Robert
I have a Bachelor's degree in piano performance with a minor in vocal performance and a Master's degree in vocal performance. I have been teaching private voice for over 30 years. I teach a wide variety of styles from musical theatre to classical, depending on the desires and needs of the student. I am also qualified to teach sacred music, including gospel style literature.
As a choral director and musical theatre vocal coach, I have been working with students in lower, middle and high school for over 25 years.
I hold professional memberships in the National Association of Teachers of Singing, American Choral Director's Association and National Association of Music Educators.

I like to start by asking them what they hope to accomplish by taking private lessons, their anticipated outcome. We talk about their response and how I can help them to achieve their desired results.
I have worked with students as young as 3rd grade up to senior adults.

Coming from someone who's never taken lessons before, my experience has been life changing. Robert's attention to detail, kindness, and expertise surpassed all my expectations. Thanks to his guidance I've felt a tremendous increase in my ability to project my voice, and sing the right notes..
I also feel like my perception of music, even songs I've heard hundreds of times in the past, has increased to the point where I can hear the subtle little details which I never noticed before..Dan is a fantastic teacher! I feel a thousand times more confident and outgoing when approaching singing. Lessons with Dan are doing wonders outside of music as I am gradually letting go of the fear of public speaking.
I would recommend class to anyone who is looking to lose their shyness, learn music, and who enjoys learning in a spacious setting.Rarely have I worked with someone as universally beloved by his students who is also unwavering in setting high standards for them. Dan has a quick wit and a comfortable way with adolescents, and he is known as a fair teacher whose classes are energetic and enjoyable. These qualities contribute to his popularity, to be sure, but they do not explain why such a wide variety of students have a deep and abiding respect for him. Dan balances the process of directing choral programs with achieving a strong outcome. His concerts are polished and well sung, rich in sub-text and colorful in dynamics. He is considerate of the feelings of others and willing to compromise to ensure that the broader needs of the school are met. That does not mean he is less than committed to his craft, far from it. His concerts and performances challenge choral members and audiences but are sensitive to the values and mores of the institution.
As all independent schools are wont to do with their talented faculty, Dan served in many capacities during his time at Darlington: as a Fine Arts Chair, Choral teacher; Varsity Tennis Coach, and musical director. He is tremendously talented and excelled in every role. His choirs regularly achieve superior ratings in regional and state competitions. Dan and I collaborated on eight musical productions, and in every production, he found a way to fuel the voices with character and emotion, giving a pulse to the music on the page. In addition, every winter I looked forward to his Christmas concert because his arrangement of Carol of the Bells always initiated my holiday spirit. It was not until he was named department chair, however, that the school tapped into particular leadership skills that had to that point remained dormant. In that role, he pushed the Darlington Fine Arts Department to evolve and his faculty to expand their repertoire of classes and performances, all the while respecting the school’s tradition and his colleagues’ sense of professionalism.
I have worked with Mr. Bishop many times in many different occasions. He is very knowledgeable about all types of vocal music. I have observed him as he worked with school choirs, college choirs
church choirs and musical theater groups. He is an excellent teacher and is able help each student flourish. I would not hesitate to recommend him for any vocal music project.Mr. Bishop is a natural in the classroom with both students and faculty alike. He has a winsome personality that makes the students want to learn what he is teaching them. I highly recommend him for a classroom or private music lesson
Excellent voice coach and instructor. Dan is very through and crafts each lesson to meet the unique needs of his student. He’s also very encouraging by offering constructive and effective comments for improvement. Great value for the money.
Mr Bishop is a real professional and is a fantastic instructor and has a wealth of knowledge! Thanks for your help!
